Snow Shoveling

What's with all the lazy morons who can't be bothered to shovel their sidewalks in this neighborhood?

  • In no way is this a defense of the lazy morons - I am an awesome shoveler - this snowfall's conditions were the worst for unclean sidewalks:

heavy overnight fall + still falling during morning rush hour + temperture below freezing = 12 inches of heavy ass frozen snow on your street come evening time.

Again no excuse, but the shoveling is now magnitudes more difficult for anyone who didn't make a major dint first thing Monday morning.

And with the crappy forecast for the next few days, expect that people are just going to wait for the warmer weather on Thursday to clean up.
  • Also remember that some of our homeowners are elderly folks that may be relying on enterprising local guys to offer to shovel. I can tell you that I didn't have anyone ringing my bell yesterday offering to do my stoop or front.
  • also nyc has a backwards law about the whole snow shoveling thing. if you shovel and clean your sidewalk, you can get sued if someone falls and hurt themselves.

but if you don't and folks fall, they can't sue you but can sue the city. you'll pay a small fine i think 500 dollars or something.

  • i was pleasantly surprised by how much was cleared on prospect between vandy and franklin, actually. only really tricky bits were by those semi-abandoned building sites. go team!
  • I was also surprised at how clear Park and Vanderbilt were the other morning.

Who's supposed to be clearing Plaza St, though? The GAP side between Vanderbilt and Flatbush, it's like they didn't even try.
  • Nice to know that some do truly care.

( ^ yes, that is indeed Prospect Heights)
  • ^^^ Love it! Banana acts of kindness are wonderful!

    that is disturbing :p.
  • Do you have a link to this law? I've heard this before but need to prove it to the folks at the office.

Actually a homeowner has 4-5 hours after snowing stops to shovel unless it is between the hours of 9pm-7am. The fine starts out at $50 and increases from there. A homeowner can be sued for anyone falling in front of their property if it is proven that a dangerous condition existed. The City cannot be sued unless they were made aware of the dangerous condition and did nothing about it.

I am not sure the exact law but they can be found at

Ok - fair enough. But no details about if someone shovels and then someone falls, and then person can sue? The link you posted didn't work.
  • Sorry Poppy wrong link it is under the Rules of NYC and there are quite a few exemptions about suing a homeowner so I think each situation might be different. In other words its not so cut and dry.

(For some reason I can't copy the link to post here)
