Polish Bar on Vanderbilt — Brooklynian

Polish Bar on Vanderbilt

I feel like I should post something about this place, since I first found this site when looking for info on the Nail Gazaasm (the weirdly named, not much lamented former nail place in the storefront that is now Home Heating Oil).

Went over to Polish Bar this morning for a pedicure, just to check it out.

Good points: The space is very nice--pretty decor, the pedicure seats are comfortable with built-in steps so they're easy to get to. They also have a really nice selection of polishes including OPI, Chanel, and a formaldehyde/toluene-free brand whose name I forget. They offer several magazines that aren't complete insults to one's intelligence, e.g. Pink and NY Magazine. The tech took what felt like just the right amount of time--I didn't feel like she was rushing, nor did I feel like I was going to get stuck in there for two hours.

Meh points: More expensive than the underdecorated, hyper-efficient place near my office in Manhattan. (With tip, the pedicure was $30.) They charge you $1 for the package of tools (nail file, etc.) which isn't much money, but they should either disclose that charge in advance, or bake it into the price of the service--as it is, the charge feels sneaky. I thought the tech was pretty aggressive with cuticle cutting, hot water, and scrubbing.

Interested to know if anyone else has been there.

  • do they have perogies?
  • i tried to make an appointment this weekend but was very turned off by their customer service. the woman answering the phones was rude and not at all professional. very odd, and not behavior i like to reward with my business. i looked the business up on yelp and brooklynian (there is another branch in clinton hill) and the reviews are very mixed. i might try again though, because i believe in second chances (also because it's pretty convenient and i am pretty lazy).
  • Anxious to try this location out. I've gone to the one on Myrtle a few times and really liked it - nice space, high end polish and good vibe overall. I didn't realize they were opening on Vandy so was excited to see them over here...

Haven't been yet but def interested to see if service is on par to Clinton Hill location. I have called once to check hours and the girl on the other end was nice, no static. I'd like to keep patronizing them, esp knowing that the owner is a local BK girl born and bred.
  • Just don't ask them to change the light bulb...

When I read that title I thought "Ooh, Polish food so close by? I hope that it's good!"

So, given that they charge $1 for the packet of tools, is this place cleaner than the typical, stripped down, mani-pedi for $25 place? I would definitely pay money for that.
