Washington is the dividing line btwn PH and CH.
...it is a little distant, but this isn't all bad. Very little street dealing down Washington that far. C-town (now something like NSA) supermaket has improved, but is by no means fancy. Thai food is yummy. Japanese is yummy.
Mexican is ok, and always deserted (I would be surprised if it lasted much longer).
Bagel Cafe is ok. Beer distributor is wonderful.
The area enjoys ample light from the Yellow Storage building.... -
While not the center of things, that area offers some good amenities. Gen is a great Japanese restaurant, Tavern on Dean is a block away, and you have mexican and thai restaurants within a few blocks, as well. Brownstoner recently posted about a bar that is due to open sometime in the near future. Vanderbilt is pretty close, especially Cornelius, on Pacific and Vanderbilt. Most important of all, you're within walking distance of a White Castle, so how can you go wrong? I think Washington will only get better with time, so my guess is that if you buy this place, you'll have a to look forward to.
I agree that the beer distributor is great. Last time I was in there, I was very impressed with their selection. Oh, and don't forget Ortine (sp?), a new cafe on Washington and Pacific - good coffee, hot chocolate, and food, with friendly service. -
I don't know enough about the Crown Heights side to comment on that neighborhood, but I live virtually across from this corner. Trust me, you're close enough to everything you want and need in PH (and Clinton Hill, for that matter). Been there nearly 3 years, no complaints.

I agree that this area will only improve with time. I have lived in PH for four years and am amazed at the difference. The other nice thing is that you are nearby to many different train lines. I know you are a little further than me (I am on Vandy) but you are within walking distance of the C,G,B,Q,2,3, and Atlantic Avenue is right there. Not bad at all.
On a different note, what beer distributor have I been missing out on? -
Beer distributor is on the westside of Washington, almost at Pacific.

it is a little industrial up by pacific but i used to live a few blocks south on washington and LOVED it!

I live on Atlantic and Washington and I love it here! Although living on Atlantic has it's drawbacks (TRAFFIC NOISE) the area is wonderful. First of all, you will be only a few short blocks from the Clinton-Washington C train, with a 10 minute walk to the G,Q&B, and 2&3, so getting places is easy. You're just one long block (about 3 min.) to Vanderbilt, where we've got Cornelius, Barrette, Weather Up, and Soda for drinking and a ton of good casual restauraunts like Beast, Amorina, Cataldos, Zaytoons, Gamin, and Mitchells. One more block and you'll be at James, one of the best restaurants in Brooklyn. Along Washington, though the Bagel Cafe sadly sucks and Udom isn't great, Gen is awesome Japanese food and the Taqueria is pretty good too. (I hope it lasts.) I swear to God the beer distributer has almost as good a selection as Bierkraft in Park Slope. Ortine is a great little cafe with wi-fi, good food, and amazing coffee. With the addition of Washington Commons, Manhattans, and soon Flying Monkey you won't have to walk to Vanderbilt to get wasted. I almost forgot Tavern on Dean which has good bar food and serves until super late. It's also just a 10 minute walk down Underhill to Prospect Park, the Library, farmer's market and Park Slope, and a 10 minute walk the other direction to Ft. Greene and BAM, and the Flea (starting again next weekend). Get a bike and we're talking less than 5 minutes. Oh yeah, and if you're on Washington and Pacific, it's only a few minutes to Outpost on Fulton just past Grand which is my go-to coffee shop if I want something more casual than Ortine. I've lived here for coming up on 2 years (after 4 in Park Slope and 4 in Manhattan) and I can't tell you how much the neighborhood has grown. The only thing I can think of that I don't like is the lack of a good grocery store. The closest one to me is the Met on Fulton and St. James and it's pretty bad. I usually end up taking the train or bus to Trader Joes.
