Churrascaria field trip: POLL CLOSED
OK this idea came out of another thread over in the Lounge, but there seems like a lot of potential interest. Who's up for lots of grilled meat served from a sword?
http://www.churrascariaplataforma.com/
I was thinking maybe 4/16, but 4/17 or 4/20 could also work.
Reply with which date is better for you if you want to come. Once we decide on a date, I'll start a poll to get a head count.
EDIT: I know this restaurant is located over on that other island, but it is the best churrascaria in NY.

Lunch is $36, Dinner $56 per person (FYI)
The first course looks like a meal in itself!! Are you looking at all that seafood and sushi!!!! Jesus, that looks good. -
4/16 evening is best for me
-
I'm interested but can't do the 16th. I think either of the other dates would work.
-
I'm in. Who should PM Danny?

You have to be careful not to fill up on the salad bar. Save room for meat!

Also, dinner is $56 per person, but I recommend not eating anything all day before going. You may not feel like eating much until later in the day next day either. So it's more economical than it seems! -

I already thanked him in the other thread for bringing all of us together for this. -

OK, mougar will need to line his pockets with plastic wrap so we can steal the shrimp (inside joke, who remembers that?) -

Strom Thurmond was otherwise a d-nozzle, but there are some pretty good stories about him. My favorite quote: "What he couldn't fit in his stomach, he put in his pocket." -

Seeing as Friday is Good Friday we may be able to get a larger group seated faster. That being said I am good for any of those days.

I'd prefer 4/17, if possible.

What time is this gonna be?
Meat wise , do they got any other type of yummy meat besides nasty porky pig? -

Em they do have other meats and they also have a great salmon.

You can even make a whole meal out of the first course salad bar. -
Thanks , Stace.
Salmon is good but I'd rather some tasty meat like lamb ,
beef , or chicken. -
Carny, would they do lamb and beef if they knew you had diet restrictions? I LOVE lamb......mumm....
-
I've been there a couple of times. They had a bunch of different cuts of beef, as well as at least one each of lamb, pork and turkey.

I think they have more beef than anything else, many different cuts of it. There is generally lamb as well, and poultry, although much of the poultry is wrapped in bacon. -
There are many delicious things to eat at the salad bar. So many, in fact, that it is all too easy to fill up before the meat even begins to come around.

And that would be a tragic failure. You need to go into that place with a strategy. -

So, I am hear-by naming myself Em's older sister and protecting her from Carny and his pork. If you take my little sis to your meatfest you better not feed her pork! You can however feed me pork and skirt steak... and sushi... -
Plataforma is good, but I've had a couple of great meals at Greenfield in Queens, right on Northern Blvd. Not great public transit access but it is about half the price of Plataforma so you could split a cab there and still save money.

Much less touristy than Plataforma too, but I'm not knocking that place. I've overeaten there a couple of times and it is very good and the salad bar is much better than at Greenfield, but who goes to a place like this to fill up on salad! -
That sounds pretty fun Turtle.... what do you think Carny? Too far?
-
If we are travelling, there are Brazillian BBQ places around (I went to one on Central Ave in Westchester).
...it could be a celebration of the meat thread and the brazilian thread. -

I've been to Greenfield several times. It's cheaper than Plataforma, but not quite as good, even putting the salad bar aside (which is just a distraction anyway). It's also Korean owned and operated (not that that's good or bad- it's just an interesting fact). It is tasty though, and I'd be willing to do this instead of Plataforma if the price difference is an issue that would determine whether someone is able to come or not.

I personally do not think the food at the Queens place is good at all. I found the meat to be too overcooked and chewy. I would much rather go to the one in Manhattan.

When did you go? I have to admit that the last time I went to that place was in 1998. At that time I was still a student and I had a car because I lived in the Bronx. Once I didn't have the car and did have a source of income, I started going to Plataforma for my churrascaria fix. -
Hey! April 16, and 17 are both possibilities for me (though I would have to get it "approved").

I went there in 2005 for my nephew's graduation. I had already tried Plataforma first so maybe that ruined me or all other churrascarias. -
Or maybe it went downhill.
-
Stacey, you're right about the meat not being quite as tender, but I did find the flavors good and the staff very nice. And being frugal, I didn't mind saving some money...which can be used for more drinks...which can make the food taste better!
When it's all you can eat, I tend to focus on the volume and the price.
I checked out the Zagat rating for both and the food/avg price breakdown is:
Greenfield: 18/$38
Plataforma: 23/$71
I've had a great time at both so not advocating one over the other. Too bad there isn't one in Brooklyn.
