I need to know
...why so many people think pictures of babies with food all over their faces are cute.
They kind of gross me out actually. Is this just because I haven't spawned/weaned one myself yet?
I think babies in general are cute. Sleeping babies, laughing ones, I'll even say a picture (no sounds, please!) of a crying baby can be cute in a way. But I don't want to see half digested peas/squash/rice cereal/food of the week all over the kid.
My sister sent me one of my nephew with chocolate or something all over his face and it just looks...ew, despite his cute smile. Then I just walked into the boss' office and saw one that looks like his youngest coated in pumpkin bits - his kids are grown, so this pic has been kept around for ages.
So - can someone please explain this phenomenon to me? What am I missing?

Perhaps you are missing a certain involuntary striated-muscley organ generally found in the chest cavity.
-
*checks chest for signs of organ removal* I'm good, whew. But yeah - I like babies, but think food goo all over them overrides their cuteness. I guess I'm the only one... :?

Toadette, you're not alone. I don't get the messy face thing either, or the bathtub shots. But then I'm pretty sure my maternal genes mutated somewhere along the way.
-
mom here, and I totally agree. ditto on the bath shots. I just think that's a little weird.
Biggest gross thing w/kids, though? The boogers. And they are non stop. But I really wish people would try to wipe noses more. -
Subject: babies
I think it's more the memory of the moment the picture was taken that makes it special, than the picture itself. -
Love bathtub shots or the getting washed in the sink shots, particularly when they are up in the bathroom and the kids are now tweens and are a bit embarassed. Parents are required to do some things that will mortify their kids. It just makes things more fun. Non-mom here, but appreciate a pic of my younger brother with the food face, tears and crazy clown-like hair.

Ugh, no way. I love my dogs but no one wants to see that business, including me.

Speaking of privates and jokes, this reminds me of that old rhetorical joke ....

So here's the thing: if you are documenting your child's development and behavior with photography, not a bad way to make make many many hours of intensive care of a developing person more fun and creative and share with far-flung extended family and those friends who show an interest, then there's going to be some photos of food on the face and baby in the sink/bath; it's only natural, and reflects the fact that feeding and bathing are major intimate daily events in infants' and parents' lives. I think I've added a couple of shots of each to a collection of a couple of hundred favorite pictures over the last 16 months (one thanksgiving turkey leg, one crayfish, two sink shots at different ages). Like many things in life: if you're not interested or find it icky, don't look.

Hey! She's not showing her privates, that's a nipple shot only! Privates are tucked neatly inside, any view of them is purely incidental.

Thanks for all the views everyone. I've tried to soften my view of the food pics (despite the fact that an acquaintance of mine put up one of herself as an orange-mush-covered-face child as her gmail profile photo). For some reason I was always okay with the bathtub pics... -
i'm with you Toadette. i don't get the food pics - not cute. in fact, i often find them repulsive. (fwiw, bath pics generally don't bother me.) someone above made a good point about the food pics - that it's probably more the memory than the pic itself - but still, i wish people would keep certain memories to themselves.
