New Plants! — Brooklynian

New Plants!

I need new plants for the yard...what's my best bet for a nursery that isn't crazy expensive (a la Chelsea Garden Center)?

Comments

  • Loews and Home Depot always have plants on-sale.
  • I don't know much about their prices but some locals have recommended Liberty Sunset nursery. It's near Fairway, but not the one (maybe Chelsea Garden) that is on Van Brunt and really noticeable. It's right on the water.

But I'll also be checking Lowes and Home Depot for my summer planting (thanks to a zipcar), but the ones here don't seem to every really have the stock their more suburban locations have.
  • Yes, that Garden Center is run by a friend and is also, for whatever it's worth, underneath the Real World Brooklyn house. Plus if you're over there, IKEA will def have some cheap plants. They may die, but they'll be cheap.
  • I desperately don't want them to die...I want to plant them and have them live forever! hydrangea, hostas, etc.
  • the BEST plants i've found are actually at a korean (?) deli down on 7th avenue and like 11th street or so. maybe 10th, maybe 12th...it's on the west side of 7th.

wish i could be more specific, but they have wonderful plants outside and they are extremely well priced and healthy.

i've been going there for years to get nearly all my plants.
  • Avoid Lowe's for plants. I used to work in the outdoor section for one and ours were generally pretty crappy and poorly cared for.

I've definitely gotten some infested houseplants there, but I'm happy to shop for annuals there or at Home Depot (at least they have a larger outdoor section for plants). I got some pansies at HD and will probably go back for petunias and impatiens when the time comes. They're cheap and it's pretty easy to tell if those plants are relatively healthy.

For perennials (the ones that you plant and expect to stick around for years and years), I'd probably go to a local, established place. It's a get what you pay for situation.
  • Liberty Sunset gets a thumbs up from me. We didn't buy plants there mostly because most of our planting is veggies and so we were buying seed or translpants, but we did pick up an organic fertilizer there. I think the place is beautiful actually and the plants looked well-cared for and really lovely. Not sure about annuals though, as I remember looking more at perennials. I don't know if they do this every year, but when I went they also had veggies growing outside, which was nice to see. (For sure you're not gonna see that at Lowe's.)
  • There's a really great nursery/garden center on the "backside" of Greenwood Cemetery, not the Fifth ave side, around Fort Hamilton Parkway and 40th Street.
  • Is "backside" in the name of this garden center?
  • Brooklyn terminal market.
  • Not in Park Slope, and you probably need a car to get there, but if you really want super-inexpensive and an unbelievably huge selection of plants, go to the Brooklyn Terminal Market in Canarsie. You can google it to get directions and more info. It's kind of like the Hunts Point market for Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden also has a yearly plant sale, in early May. Large selection, average prices, and it benefits the garden.
  • You could mail-order from Logee's (http://www.logees.com/) - they're great. I have no idea how the prices compare, though.
And there are always the plant sales at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens . . .

I think you are talking about Shannon
  • I can't remember the name of this one but it is my favorite.. on Caton Ave at about E 12th street. A left down Caton coming from PS..takes up a corner lot. Over the years I have gotten the best plants there and for the higher quality they are the prices were good.
  • Am pretty sure the terminal market has both flowers and seedlings. (a friend was there this weekend, unless I'm confused-which has been known to happen.) Probably convenient for people with cars.
  • think locally: zuzu's petals on 5th avenue.. great service, great selection
  • thank you prezst!

    zuzu's does have amazing plants!

i agree Zuzu is terrific but expensive. I couldn't do my whole garden from purchasing there but last year I bought 4 lavendar plants that did spectacular and are back this Spring and will likely spread their wonder.
  • Green Market at Grand Army Plaza!
  • definitely buy the herbs and flowerbox plants from the greenmarket...I just need some bigger stuff...hydrangea, hostas, etc.
  • You can try the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. They have nice plants and free admission until noon on Saturdays (except if there is a festival happening). They will soon have their plant sale which is great except it happens on a weekday.
  • Kings County Nursery on New York Avenue is an excellent nursery with good healthy plants and staff who know what they're talking about.
  • Any grade school/church plant sales coming up this weekend?
I'll wait for the BBG (member preview May 5 this year) for most stuff, but would mind some pansies in the meantime. Has anyone been there to see what's available at the plant shop right now?

Shannon nursery on the other side of Greenwood is perfectly good -- I'd just rather walk the things home than figure out a ride.

p.s. Seeds are out at the Coop, if you're a member. Nasturiums, herbs...tucked in between the mangoes and potatoes.
  • thanks! i didn't even know to look for seeds at the coop.

i'll also second the kings county nursery suggestion -- they were great when i needed to buy a tiny amount of sod. i got some assorted veggies from them, too. carnivore says there's a great sandwich shop nearby, but you'll have to ask him for details.
  • I second the recommendation on both the Botanic Garden (just bought some seeds last weekend) and, if you can get there, the terminal market in Canarsie. good luck!
