Need new health insurance plan suggestions — Brooklynian

Need new health insurance plan suggestions

My current health insurance plan (not through work) will be ending on June 1 with no option to renew, and the policy my company has sucks. (Blue Cross of Alabama with benefits based on Alabama medical rates - ridiculous.)

I went to www.ehealthinsurance.com but the options were with companies I've never heard of and you have to be self-employed, which I am not. Suggestions for other options?

  • What kinda medical needs do you have? I find that a dental cleaning and maybe a medical check up are cheaper to just swallow out-of-pocket than pay monthly insurance fees. Also, prescription drugs can be bought online, overseas, for cheap.

But I rarely hurt myself enough to need a doctor and have no health issue that I can't live with, at least for now. What Company do you work for?
  • If you try to get health insurance on your own (not through a company with a lot of employees), you're going to pay a fortune for any kind of decent coverage.
  • have you looked into the freelancers' union?

i know they have group plans, which i'd imagine would be a much better deal than going it alone.
  • freelancers is great. if you can qualify, and its some paperwork showing income levels, they are great for health insurance. go to freelancers website and check it out.
  • fracturedatlas.org has plans.
  • I am not a freelancer and I imagine I need to be a freelancer to qualify for freelancers' medical insurance, no?
  • Oh, and I'm not an artist either. Fracturedatlast.com seems to be for artists only. I'm a regular employee looking for a better health plan than my company offers. My company has about 15 employees so I guess they don't have a lot of $$ or negotiating power to get a good plan.

I have been healthy my whole life until about a year ago and then had unforeseen health issues (nothing huge). I'm afraid to go to any doctors now for fear they will find something wrong because my company's insurance plan won't cover "pre-existing" conditions for 12 months (what is up with our health care system??).

    Thanks for any further suggestions!
  • Normally a lurker here.

I use Atlantis Health Plan. http://www.atlantishp.com/

It's okay. I haven't had any major health issues, so it really hasn't been tested.

It's much better than Blue Cross, IMO.

EDIT: I didn't see the post about your pre-existing condition. Atlantis' Policy is 6 months and you don't have to answer any health questions prior, so you may be OK.
  • oops -- misread your first post. thought you said you _were_ self-employed. sorry about that.
  • What's the application process like for Healthy NY, if i may ask? I know back in the day they didn't actually check your income levels when you applied.

  • I'd say... don't get sick or injured. No accidents allowed. Also, you can't go to prison for medical bills and hospitals have to treat you if you show up!
  • In New York City, Westchester, & Nassau Counties, you can email Allan Kilimnik at [email protected] for very affordable health insurance rates. Usually 20-30% less than the companies listed above, and he can write a group of one for self-employed people so you would pay a group rate instead of an expensive individual rate.

I take people off of the Freelancers Plan all week long and usually get them better coverage, without deductibles, for less money. I also have an association I can put people into if they aren't self-employed so they can get a group rate.

See what Allan can do to help you. Same comprehensive coverage without reduction of benefits, but at an affordable rate.
