Place to Stay - Help out Craigslist Victims — Brooklynian

Place to Stay - Help out Craigslist Victims

I'm writing on behalf of some overseas friends who were just scammed out of $1300 for a short-term apartment rental on Craigslist. Do you know anyone who happens to be out of town, and would be looking for some ($paying$) apartment sitters starting this coming Thursday (4/16) through 4/23?

They bought some expensive plane tickets, and were planning on staying in Soho for a week starting Thursday. Problem is, the apartment does not exist, and it looks like the bank account they wired $1300 to is now closed.

They were anticipating paying $200/night for a 2-br apartment. I was going to recommend Holiday Inn Select, but I think they are hoping for something that would give them a good common area where they could hang out and cook, socialize, etc. at night.

I can vouch for these people. Let me know if you have any ideas on accommodations for 4 people (2 BR) starting 4/16 and going through 4/23... Thanks!

  • Why didn't they check w/you to see if the apt. was legit?
  • Sometimes people actually make decisions without checking with me first. They are crazy like that!

  • My next door neighbor is out of the country until the end of June. it's only a one bedroom apartment though, if they really need a place to stay, they could meet me and stay there.

and hence you get screwed without having someone check it out for you.

Hey, Eggcream, put an eggcream in it. Anyone can be potentially defrauded in this world. Why focus on this issue? Either saying something helpful, or shut your eggcream.

  • Care to share details of how the defrauding happened? I'd like to be aware who's out there doing what, so that I can watch out.

I would try to find a hotel on priceline. I stayed at the Barclay Intercontinental for 105.00 a night (3nights)a couple weeks back, by bidding on priceline. I, too, am now trolling for a place and using Craigslist. I am from Iowa and looking for a 3 month stay for an internship. So, how does one find a place, if you don't have any connections in NY? This is an unpaid internship, required for graduation, so money if very tight. I can't visit again, before the internship starts in mid May.

Try calling some of the local colleges (NYU, Pace, Columbia, St. Francis, LIU Brooklyn, etc) to inquire about whether they have rentals available in their dorms for the summer, or about student housing that may be available. Some of them will rent out their dorms, others will be able to advise you on local places that may rent to out of town students in town for the summer.

  • NYU Summer housing has a 3 week limit and runs around $200 a week depending on the space. NYU kids get first pickand most of the best spaces are already gone...

  • http://www.studenthousing.org/ Another idea... I am not sure how they handle summer housing. My boss's daughter lives in one of their apartments.

Ps. They are not a non-profit.
  • Subject: Ain't Exactly Summer

Apparently some of y'all have been out of college for a while because the time frame they're looking for ain't exactly summer.

  • I guess he found a place for them
  • Try NYU Greenwich Hotel.
  • This is much better than craigslist... www.vrbo.com Vacation Rentals by Owner. I'm not sure it's anymore "vetted" than craigslist, but there are comments and feedback and so on. Most people on there have property they regularly rent out. I've used it a couple of times -- summer cottage upstate and an apartment in Amsterdam.

Seriously, are you 12? In that case, bite me.
  • Craigslist is horrible, most of the time. I was almost scammed but
since I never get anything easy, I followed my heart.. I tried to sell
a jaguar & a mink coat last year, a (so called) buyer sent me a check
for $8,000. 4 the car (I listed the car for $4,000.). He asked me to
cash the check & wire the overpayment to the trucking company (in Florida) so they could pickup the car. Anyway, I called the bank
& gave them everything that was on the check and they told me that
the check was a fraud. If I would've cashed the check, I would be
up s___ creek now. Same thing happen with the coat.
Thank God for intuition. The email address for the (so called buyer is: JJames @ gmail.com) The check was drawn on a company named: Amason ServicesLLC PO box 6485 Village, NV 89450. Wells Fargo Bank 18511 Wedge Pkwy, Reno, NV 89511 Signer was stamped: Lori Miller.
Beware of doing money transactions on craigslist. Stick with ebay, at least you're dealing with Pay Pal (as a middle company).
    Stay alert people.
