Coney Island (fireworks, Cyclones, the Beach, etc)
Hi folks, what can anyone tell me any tips about Coney Island?
What part of the beach is the best?
Any good places to get a drink on the boardwalk?
How about Brooklyn Cyclones games? Tips on when to go, where to sit?
I hear there are a bunch of fireworks displays, what times?
I have only been to Coney once last summer, so looking forward to going again this year.

I played minature golf there last summer... it was cool. I wanted to see the freak show but they all had the day off

Im not a big fan of the beach area there its pretty crowded in the summer. (I go further down the Boardwalk to Brighton Beach)
There are a bunch of stands that have beer on tap - there is I think only one sit down bar on the stretch of the boardwalk by Coney (but there could be more now).
Cyclones games are soooo much fun. I personally like the games against the Staten Island Yankees. It is such an "informal" stadium and almost all the seats there are good seats. (I prefer the first base line).
They used to have fireworks every Friday night which started I think right before or right after July 4th weekend and they start about 9:00 p.m. The best spot for that used to be right outside Astroland on the boardwalk.
On July 4th (and I think Memorial and Labor Day) they have the Blue Angels flying club that performs in the air
Also there is the Mermaid Parade but I forget what weekend that is. That is a lot of fun. -

Andy just started a whole Coney Island board for just this type of question.

Coney Island rocks! There are regular fireworks displays thoughout the summer, though I forget when, maybe Fridays at 9pm, I could be way off though. I think it opens just after Easter.

Yeah, it is kind of sick. But fun. I got the freak in the nuts twice, which is much more difficult than the face. -
generally there is free music playing some where.

Is there still a salsa dance scene on the boardwalk on Friday nights?
I haven't been out for that since the stadium went up . . .
It was more or less impromptu - a bar at the end furthest from Brighton Beach put out monster speakers . . .
Mermaid Parade is the end of June - there's a website that I am too lazy too find for you
AND you can get a shot of vodka anytime of the day on the boardwalk down at Brighton.
(my alcoholic friend and I used to run our dogs in the off-season out there, okay?)
There's a wild Russian cafe society on that end, making it feel weird and safe at 1am on a Saturday summer night.... -
