Getting big stuff from IKEA to PH — Brooklynian

Getting big stuff from IKEA to PH

I need to buy some big furniture at IKEA, and of course I have no car/truck.

Does anyone have an experience/advice on getting large items back to PH?

  • How large?
There's always Armchair's 'man with a van' service. Or getting a Uhaul for a day.

A cheap option is the UHaul place on 4th Ave. I rented a van there for a couple of hours. $20/day plus milage. I passionately hate UHaul, so the recommendation comes w/a caveat: it's not pleasant.

Besides dealing with the duuuuuumb and sloooowwwww UHaul people, you still need to schlepp the stuff from van to house.

    What about Armchair Warrior?
  • Didn't know about Armchair's van service -- would rather support someone local than the Uhaul beast...
  • They also deliver same day for like $60.
  • zipcar homie!
  • I think you can rent uhaul vans at Ikea. But AW is also a good option.

ditto armchair.....so much good feedback from people who used him
  • Armchair is great.
  • I bought a 1/2 ton of furniture last year when I moved (It was literally 1,000 lbs), and I think it cost ~$80 for same day delivery from Ikea, and they hauled it to my 4th floor walkup...A zipcar, uhaul, etc. would probably cost near that once the rental, gas, etc. was included, and you would still have to haul everything through the parking lot and into your home (And have the fun experience of driving a motor vehicle around Brooklyn)...
  • When i got most of my furniture when I first moved I had it all shipped, which is an $80 flat rate.

I've also taken the gypsy cabs for around $20, but those don't really work if you have BIG items.

I also rented a Uhaul once, which came to a total of about $40. You can fit a lot of those flatboxes in a uhaul, and I would recommend that, if loading/hauling isn't a problem.
  • I can help with these arrangements and the assembling as well if you like. I have van access and extensive Ikea experience. PM me if you still need someone.
  • I can vouch for Mr. DeLeon's special Ikea talents. He drove me to Ikea and helped me figure out some rather complicated floor-to-ceiling shelving, then hauled the pieces upstairs and put the whole thing together with me.

I'd been putting it off because of the hassle, but he made the whole thing easy.

    $89 within brooklyn

i've always had a good experience with their delivery.
  • I used Armchair's services 2 weeks ago to return something big to Ikea - very good - highly recommended. (Tel: 718-496-5297)

Additionally I've had Trainsmoke Deleon help me out with Ikea assembly. He was fab, and I highly recommend him too!

Brooklynian is so good for finding these sort of local services!
  • We've been addicted to IKEA since we moved in in February... and we've tried several different ways to get our loot home:

    - With a massive IKEA desk for my wife, we took a gypsy cab for $30. There was a guy with a cell phone who walked up to us and arranged it. First he called and a guy with a sedan drove up. The driver tried to stuff the desktop into the car and dropped one of the legs and we sent him away. Then we asked the guy with the cellphone to please get a driver with a real van — and a second driver, this one with a van, showed up and we set a price. We got all our stuff to the Heights for under $35 with tip. Make sure when you get to IKEA that the gypsy cabbies are around that night. Last month there was a night that it looked liked they'd been chased away. Bring a car service phone number in case...

    - Another night we lugged smaller stuff home on the Ikea Shuttlebus to Borough Hall subway. Free. Runs till 8 p.m.

    - Another night we took our shelves and cd boxes on the MTA bus that stops in front of IKEA and goes to the subway. Runs all the time.

    - Now I'm about to get a desk for myself, and I'll rent a ZipCar by the hour. Gas and insurance are included and I know exactly what I want, so I think I could do a hit and run in two hours. ZipCar doesn't have a big van that I've found, though you can get a Scion XB for $11 an hour or a Toyota Tacoma Pickup (hope it doesn't rain) or an SUV-ish Subaru Forester for $13 an hour.

    - I moved using a rental U-Haul van. Just $20 a day, but insurance, gas, and mileage are extra, so the cost kept climbing.
