From what I've been able to piece together, it's a discount store. If I'm correct, I have no idea what the owners are thinking. I pray that someone proves me wrong. Maybe it'll be a discount store with a bar in the backroom?
-
someone intrepid's got to figure it out and post!! i was curious today, but i fear there's a wormhole in there and i didnt want to end up in another time/place/universe on the one gorgeous day we get this week.
-
where's this?
-
Flatbush, former Nouveau Decor spot, next to Heights Coffee. It's a nightmare.
-
Is the space open? The last time that I walked by it was only a sign over a closed storefront grate.
-
why exactly is this a nightmare? i happen to miss all those 99 cent stores that used to live around here.
-
i'd be thrilled about a discount store too.
with super savers closed, i hate having to shop at duane reade. i wish i never needed to set foot in there ever again.
bring it on! -
It is an awesome Chinatown style gift shop... Kinda like a mini Pearl Mart. Please let's not be snarky!
-
Just drove past and it was open.....from a bit of a distance, looked like a Chinese 'junky finds' store like the kind you find many of in Chinatown, with porcelain knick-knacks......
-
i love pearl river mart!

Oh, no way!!! I can't wait to go in there! I love Pearl River Mart, too. -
Maybe they just followed canal street over the bridge and got lost?
-
If that's what it is (and it is what it looks like from the outside), they're going to be very successful. People love Pearl River type knickknacks. No need to walk to the deep south slope for them anymore.
-
im in heights coffee right now and im going to see if its open when I leave.
It looks insane. maybe there's cock fighting in the back. -

Keep us posted, Santa :-).

I stopped by yesterday after I picked up some supplies at the Duane Reade. Should of gone to Fortune first because some items were about half less than they were at Duane Reade. I'm happy it's around and hope it sticks around.

I feel sorry for the guy across the street next to the train station. Seems to me we've had a junk store in the neighborhood for years.
-
Seems to me that'd make his rent wayyy lower, giving him the edge on the new competition.
I see nothing wrong with having more than one.
Sure beats a street of empty storefronts (and the resulting effects), and if the deals are better than Duane Reade what's not to like? -

Which place is that? The guy w/the sunglasses? Between the general disarray of that storefront and the drunks hanging around out front, that place looks like a scary hole to me. -
yes, that's the place, but the man who runs the place is really, really nice and they tons of suitcases, sunglasses, socks, headphones, scarves, rainboots, notebooks, and other junk...The panhandlers usually hang out in front of the deli and not the junk store.
-
the panhandlers who hang out there are very funny and friendly.

Really?! Well, I guess that I just need to check it out! I did get to Fortune Inc. today. I loved it! A totally crazy array of merchandise. I wish them luck! -

meh. the one guy that's there every day all day barking at length at anyone that walks by gets old really fast. maybe i'm just grumpy. -

I'd agree with the "grumpy." If you're talking about Kamel, he's an absolutely great guy who I've known for many years. He may be over-friendly, but I've never heard him say a bad thing to a soul. -
the eye patch guy?
-
I went to Fortune Avenue the other day. Unfortunately it's nothing like Pearl River Mart or any of the other fun Chinatown knick-knack stores. It's a crappy dollar store with discounted bottom-of-the-line houseware stuff, like plastic tablecloths and Comet. Like what you'd find on 5th Avenue in Park Slope, except with weird Chinese decorations, like a Garfield clock that barks "Welcome!" at you as you step into the store.
-

Kamel's the eye-patch guy. Ask him to make you a greeting card for any holiday and trust me, he will deliver.
I do have to say that I always feel bad for his buddy, Gary's, almost yearly attempt to start a shoe shine business. I've told him plenty of times folks walking down Flatbush are just going to be too busy. He just doesn't listen.
Sorry to hear that Fortune Inc. may just be a little cheap knick-knack store.... -
My 2 cents - this place blows. I don't want to get into the whole "that space should be a fish monger or butcher or anything but a nail salon" conversation, but that place is like a Chinese circus on acid eating an unimaginative dollar store. I agree with Bricktop - totally like a store from 5th Ave, but with Chinese decorations.
Color me disappointed. -
i purposely walked by the other day with the intention of going in, but all the decorations in the front scared me, and i decided against it.
i thought it was going to be slightly different.
and by different, i mean better.
but i'll have to actually go in for a full assessment another time. perhaps while shrooming. -
^^^ I endorse... and want a full report.
