the Rocawear truck sitting on Atlantic Yards — Brooklynian

the Rocawear truck sitting on Atlantic Yards

Anyone else find the guys whose only function it seems to be to stand outside the truck in a full suit, with sunglasses, even at 8:45 AM, utterly hilarious? They look like "Men in Black" guys hiding some Roca-Alien in that truck.

  • I saw the truck but not the guys (it was late). I love the fact that it seems like they're squatting on Rattner's property. Fucking awesome.
  • Actually, they're already standing there at 7am. My gym is across the street and I keep wondering what they're doing there so early throughout my entire workout.
  • Guessing they are hoping to net the swarms of people that pass through the area on their morning commute.

Perhaps their management demands they be out there looking sharp all morning (starting bright and early) to rope people in, or at least look upscale nice and professional in passing, to get people interested in coming back later to check it out.
  • The opposite is happening. They look misplaced and unapproachable. Also, where would you stop your car if you were interested in this on your morning commute?
  • I was thinking about pedestrian folks that might see it as they approach the various Atlantic Ave / Pacific Street subway entrances.

Or all the thousands of folks that pass through those busy crossroads on MTA buses.

Or folks coming and going from shopping for other stuff at Atlantic Center.

Haven't seen the guys yet, but I'm underground going through there. Looking unapproachable (in spite of being dressed up nice an' professional) would certainly not help business. Maybe they're bored. :)
  • LOL, you covered them all.

BTW I haven't seen a single person check into the truck...myself included, and I am technically curious to see what's going on there.
  • Brooklynian outing! Ha.

    Then we go drink somewherez.
  • Go ahead and organize :-)
It could be like a flash mob for them.
  • They're not exactly squatting, of course. Rocawear co-founder Jay-Z is an investor in the Nets--a minimal investor, of course, just enough so that Ratner has someone with the appropriate cred fronting for his destruction of the neighborhood.

And actually, a while ago Jay-Z also sold the rights to Rocawear--to a big multinational that also makes clothes for Sears and JC Penney. So he's kinda just fronting there, too.

Nice work if you can get it.
  • Your right, though...it is an odd location.

A zillion people passing through the periphery of that intersection that will see it, but (based on outer-periphery locations of bus stops and subway entrances, shop entrances etc) probably a low percentage of visitors that regularly visit that lone inner island to actually pop in.

Wonder how many people are actually inspired to cross from the opposite shores of Flatbush or Atlantic or upper 4th Ave to actually go inside....

Wait, I believe we've addressed that already. (hah)

    Inside the truck:

  • Maybe I'll sweat the place up after they gym tomorrow. See how that goes down ;-)
  • maybe their strategy is that bored bloggers will post about it.

    ...it'll never work.

    (the above would be sarcasm)
  • I went by a while ago to check it out and snap pics. A couple are here:

The big guys in suits chatted me up and invited me to check out the inside. I did go in, although didn't feel comfortable taking photos. Nothing special, I thought. Don't know how effective it will be for their bottom line.
  • They were also standing out there, wearing the suits, on Monday when it was 90+ degrees out. I hope Ratner and Jigga are paying them above minimum wage for that.

Glad I wasn't the only one who's noticed them!
