drummer's grove in prospect park

Subject: drummer's grove in prospect park

Anyone know if the people who play there every sunday would be bothered by someone (me) showing up with a snare drum and sticks? The sticks I'd bring are tala wands, so they're much softer/quieter and warmer than regular sticks...and I'd likely do a lot of roll-y sorta playing heavy on the dynamics and not just pound away like an obnoxious ass.

I just don't know how many that go there are regulars in a sort of clique that might be offended by the thought of some new-comer showing up with a drum that isn't played with the hands, and I'd hate to be that guy.. ;)

  • i'd think that sort of thing would be encouraged. maybe even the point of it.

    Exactly.

I think everyone is encouraged to join.
  • If it were me, I would probably walk on over, listen for a while and then casually mention that I, too, play the drums and would they be open to a new member.
  • You don't need an invitation.

Anyone is free to bring their drums and participate...

The other posters are probably correct.

Maybe you should just ask the group directly. If it's open, they'll let you know.
  • If Andy Samberg will be there so will I.
  • Yay, thanks, I'll have to give it a shot. I've watched in passing and it's definitely an open thing -- anyone can walk right up and join in.. But the few times I've watched briefly I've seen nothing more than hand drums, so I wasn't sure if anything with sticks is a sort of unspoken no-no.
  • I'm sure it will be fine. I've seen people with all kinds of instruments there.
  • I've seen drums, trombones, sax, flutes, you name it. I've also jumped in with a liquor inspired/induced dance of my own, LOL
  • ... kool SNL video!
  • I used to live across the street and I've seen drumsticks there. In fact, for a while there was this guy who would bring a simple set-up drumset w one snare.

I think it all sounds awesome and I miss hearing it from my living room!
