South Slope Dog Run — Brooklynian

South Slope Dog Run

edited November -1 in Brooklyn Pets
We're trying to organize an effort to get together a group of dog owners to "adopt" the small triangle of park on 6th Avenue between Prospect Avenue and 18th Street and have it formally designated as a dog run.

If any of you South Slope/Greenwood Heights dog owners are interested in joining in on this effort, or even just want to add your name to the list of those supportive of the idea, please email pam @ southslopedog . org. Check out http://www.southslopedog.org for more info.

Also - for any of you involved in the effort to get a dog run in Prospect Heights that I read about on this site, we'd love to hear from you about what worked/didn't work for your group.

Many thanks!

  • We've been trying to get one in Sunset Park forever. *sigh* I don't know why it's so damn hard!!
  • Seems folks may have already "adopted" it by the lack of grass, more dirt and MANY dogs.

I'm all for dog runs when they make sense and are legal.

Contact Community Board 7 (718.854.0003) to get info on petitioning NYC Parks.

Should be a community effort, not just a take over by a few dog owners. My 2 cents.
  • I'm not the one spearheading the whole thing, but I'm pretty sure the intention is for it to be fully a legit community effort and in no way a "takeover."

I'll pass along the CB7 advice/contact info. Thanks much!
  • It's not advise, it's the way things work. Parks would have to goto CB7 before the change, especially since there is such a dearth of park area/playgrounds in the district.

Contact Grace Gillian, who's the chair of the Parks Committee. She'll be able to vet (no pun intended) it at CB7 and assist with the Parks Dept.

There was a presentation by a Sunset Park dog owners association last month at CB7. The presented their petition and a plan for the area for the proposed dog run. Mixed reviews...

This is my advise on the way to proceed :)
  • Thanks much - the main organizer seems to already be aware of the need to proceed in this manner. She'd like us to identify more neighbors who are supportive of the idea before approaching the community board, though.

So - If any of you out there are willing to just express support for/lend your name to the effort (sorta like signing a petition, but via email), please email pam @ southslopedog . org. Thanks!
  • Let Pam know ipetitions.com is a good way to set up a free online petition. It has been used by several community groups to lobby CB7.
  • from one of the news groups:
    Hi everyone,

A few of us in the neighborhood are working to establish a dog run in one of the mini-parks next to Prospect Expressway. We believe it will improve the neighborhood. Please take a look at this petition and sign it if you agree. I don't have a dog so I can attest that you do not need a dog to want a dog run.

The petition outlines what we are requesting from the Community Board and the community at large. Other details including pictures and a diagram of the proposed sites can be found at the following URL.

Please invite your neighbors to sign the petition.

While we are collecting names for the petition, we will be moving forward with the following steps.

    Steps:

    1. Parks Department will review our site selection and give us their endorsement.
    2. Community Board 7 will review our petition to judge whether we have community consensus.
    3. A public forum and vote will be held.
    4. We will solicit funds for the run from our district councilperson.

    Thank you for the help.

    Marc
