Buying a New Bed — Brooklynian

Buying a New Bed

mougar
edited November -1 in The Lounge / Random Stuff
I'm getting a real bed (i.e. no more futon) and want some advice on where to go around here. I'm thinking either 1800-mattress or Ikea. Any suggestions?

I need to get
-queen mattress, medium-firm
-bed frame and possibly headboard
-wooden platform or box spring

Is that doable for around $800-1000?

  • No advice on price, but I ordered at 4 PM on a Friday from 1800mattress and had my bed delivered and set up by 10:30 Saturday morning.
  • So they brought it up to your apartment and assembled it for you? I'm on the fifth floor so that would help. A lot.
  • I can offer limited advice except- I had a crap metal bedframe and didn't want to invest in a box-spring so I got this board thing that they sell to cheaply replace a boxspring...don't do it. My mattress was totally ruined in less than a year. Luckily, it was cheapish anyway but I would advise against it.
I have, however, owned a platform bet without a boxspring and it was fine BUT it was a mattress made for no boxspring (IE it had a built-in wood bottom.)
  • 1800mattress all the way. Queen sets (including boxspring) start around $400 (not including delivery). It comes with the cheap metal frame, which is fine to begin with. If you want to upgrade to a better frame or headboard, buy it somewhere else. They would also take away your old mattress (if you had one).
  • yup, get the box spring thing.

...and if you are feeling broke I can get you my mother in laws bedframe (she is downsizing her apt in June). Lots of stuff has to go.

(note: The mattress is in good shape, but I'm not a fan of others mattresses. Get your own mattress).
  • If you want to upgrade to a nice bed, try Charles P Rogers. They have a store on 17th st closer to 6th ave in the city for you to check out in person. They have a sale on too.
  • My mattress came from Town Bedding in Chelsea, anice mom and pop place and priced better than the chains

I say no to 1-800 mattress. I wouldn't get anything I couldn't try, You are going to be spending 1/3 or your life on it (-8

The mattress type should match the foundation type, some mattresses are made to go on a box spring, others are made to go on a platform.

I had a captains bed for many years until it fell apart. The drawers underneath were great and with the right kind of mattress you can get the feel yo want, soft firm or in between.

If you are getting a bed frame as well, look at craigslist, I think I paid $75 for the one I have now, with head and foot boards and a slatted foundation. Would have cost

It is very difficult to shop and compair mattresses. The mattress companies private lable everything so it is hard to compare models.

You can often find a great deal at Macy's when they have a sale.
  • We recently got a new mattress. It's one of those thicker ones (grrr...harder to get sheets that fit as well as I like) and we have a platform bed, no box spring. The bf took care of it all, but it went well. He went through the Sleep's on 5th Ave. They set up delivery for the next day and the guys showed up early in the time slot, and did exactly as expected, put the board thing in, mattress on top and took all the shipping materials. Quick and painless.

No idea on prices on mattresses but it was def. under $1K for a great mattress alone.

I got our bed and two nightstand combo at this place near Union Square (NW corner, easy to miss entrance). I picked what I wanted, paid, and picked a delivery date. The delivery guys were very careful about not banging up the floors and walls (and even put the felt I had out under all legs without me asking). I even convinced them to move something else (old, enormous A/C) left by previous tenants to the basement for a nice tip, and that thing was heavy! I think the nightstands were about half the price, so the bed frame (which with a headboard that is very comfortable) was probably around $400 and at least a little better than Ikea stuff.

I spent a lot of time looking at bedframes and Ikea stuff was the cheapest but they didn't have what we wanted. If you're interested, I can find the name of the store where I got mine. It's a curved back headboard, with faux leather panels that make it comfy to lean against.
  • Try this place:

We threw out our metal frame bed and got one like this:

  • Don't try to save with cheap mattresses. Unless you like to buy new ones every few years. 20 years ago we bought a set made by Shifman. It is just as good now as it was then. Bloomingdales used to sell them with their house label. Don't know if they still do.

Whatever. It was more than I wanted to pay. But it was money well spent and, in the long run, a savings.

As far as the frame is concerned, that depends on what your style demands. We got an old four poster at a used furniture store. These days they would probably call it an antique and want a lot more than the $130 we paid.
  • Thanks for the suggestions, I will probably end up getting the Queen set of one of these

Sealy Posture Premier Islandia Plush - $589

Sealy Posture Premier Luxemburg Plush Pillow Top - $689

    and this frame seems fine

Heavy Duty 7 Leg Support Frame - $100
  • In this age of bed bugs, I would consider carefully before getting things delivered. Especially if they offer to remove your old mattress. I have heard that Sleepy's offers a 30 day money back so they could be spreading those blood suckers all over the place. Just sayin'.

    Ewwww and yuck.
  • Those metal bedframes squeak like crazy- mine was so bad that it woke me up when I rolled over. Annoying.

    RRrrriiiiiggghhhhhttttttt.
  • Purchased a mattress both through Sleepys and 1800. Both were fine and both delivered and set up the mattress but I did think that 1800 had the fastest service. (Scarlett just an FYI - both of these places sell only new mattresses still vacuum sealed in the plastic.)

I found a mattress I liked at Sleepys that included a few extras (I think it was a pillow top and something else [maybe boxspring]). I called 1800 and they had the bed for the same price or maybe $10 cheaper. I told them that Sleepys had the same thing but they included pillow top, etc. Without even putting me on hold the 1800 woman told me "no problem, we will throw those in also". So before you order make sure you see what is on sale at other places and have 1800 match it or beat it.

Also if you are getting a Queen boxspring and you live in an older Brooklyn walk up make sure you measure the clearance and if not let them know you need your Queen box spring split. (I was not charged extra for this).

srsly. This was during my BedStuy days. No one stayed with me there. It was a sad few years.

Any reason not to get it split?
  • ..um, it won't fit up the stairs.
  • Ugh, I hate buying mattresses...such a sleazy sales process.

I found this site useful when talking to 800-mattress and the like (since they'll always claim they don't have the same models as the competitor and try to suggest something else).

Damn! I should have done that! I got mine at Sleepy's. The softer mattress was on sale, but I wanted the firm that wasn't and they gave me the deal on it. So i guess it wasn't that bad a deal.

PS.... So mougar, why the sudden interest in improving the bedroom situation? May I suggest a velvet cushioned headboard?

(I kid, you know I like to tease my friends :P )
  • Perhaps the modern bachelor pad approach?

  • damn, he wouldn't even need the Wolf shirt.
  • Oo that's a pretty one Mamacita! Mougar's room is totally big enough for that. Although he has such particular style ideas. I might suggest a swing and support system for hanging and tying people up.

This is unfortunately a story that came out today:
1-800-Mattress Founder's Wife Murdered, Cops Arrest Son Nassau County police say that Kay Barragan, 65, was found dead in her Searingtown home yesterday morning and that her 38-year-old son Eduardo was charged with second-degree murder. Barragan was the estranged wife of 1-800-Mattress founder Napoleon Barragan; a company spokesman called it "a terrible tragedy for the family and for the company as well" and also added that Eduardo Barragan had a history of psychological problems. Police said the son was in his bedroom when they arrived.

A neighbor told Newsday that she saw a man and a woman in front of the Barragan house arguing on Tuesday afternoon, "I heard her say, 'No! No! No! No! Stop it! Stop it!'" Kay Barragan, who was found with "traumatic injuries to her upper body and her head area" had apparently been suffering from a number of illnesses. Her daughter told the Daily News that her brother Eduardo was schizophrenic; the Post reports that police are looking into whether he pushed his mother down the stairs.

Napoleon Barragan was not at the house; he arrived after being told of his wife's death. The company said he always credited her for helping him start the business by loaning him $2,000 (which she made from selling Avon products) in 1976. At its peak, 1-800-Mattress, which was also called Dial-A-Mattress, was a $170 million business but recent it filed for bankruptcy (Sleepy's will probably buy it).

Well that shouldn't be so hard as Mougar doesn't weigh that much.

    (OH!!!)

Hah, I've decided that I'm at a point in my life where I should have a bed that is longer than me.
  • we have to stop him from cutting off his legs.

  • pimp on mougar, pimp on.
  • Why not get a water bed? Best night's sleep you'll ever have!

You can get a frame made up at any unfinished furniture store, and buy a mattress, heater and liner online.

If you're interested let me know and I'll pm you the necessary dimensions for a queen-sized frame.
