Won't you be my neighbor? — Brooklynian

Won't you be my neighbor?

Subject: Won't you be my neighbor?

Hello, everyone! My boyfriend and I just signed a lease in Prospect Heights for a place about a block north of the park/museum/library. We're new to living in Brooklyn, and NY in general, having been in Detroit and then Worcester previously. He's going to be taking a Fellowship at LICH and I'm going to be looking for a job as soon as we're settled in.

I'm curious if anyone has advice for a young couple starting out green in the neighborhood? Places to go, places to avoid, general tips like that. We're moving in at the end of the month (around the 25th), and we've hardly had any time to look around and check the place out; we've just looked at where the nearest transportation and grocery stores are, basically. I'm hoping to find some friends in the area, since it was pretty hard to meet people in our current city. We're both basically the definition of 'nerd', me being a huge sci-fi fan/general geek and him being an Asian evil genius computer guru and doctor. Not huge on the 'clubbing' scene, basically.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any advice/conversation, I've been lurking for a bit and most people here seem very nice.

-Kat

  • Hi Kate,

Welcome to Brooklyn. Sounds like you found a great place. I am not that familiar with prospect heights but anyplace thats close to the park and the museum must be great.
There are alot of great places to check out in park slope and during the summer there are many outdoor events in the borough. My favorit is the "movies with a view" under the brooklyn bridge. Its free and lots of fun. Here is the link:

Thank you! That's perfect - anything with the word 'free' in it lol. The picture on the linked sight is beautiful, I can imagine hanging out watching a movie there in nice weather for sure.
  • free 1st saturday nights at the brooklyn museum.

check out vanderbilt for food and bars.
washington has a bunch too...although more food than bars still.
franklin park isn't too far from you (st. johns and franklin ave) either.
  • Also, check out first saturdays at the brooklyn museum...Basically, its a free event at the brooklyn museum on the first saturday evening every night where they open up the museum and have various lectures, films, tours, music, dancing, etc...Its usually a good time (and free!)

Also, there is a wide variety of bars, etc. on Vanderbilt if you are into that kind of thing...There will probably be a hangout you'll like...
  • Yeah, I think I am going to have to do much more poking around to find restaurants and things like that. Thanks for the heads up on the first Saturdays, guys.

We actually just found out that the only cable company that covers the area doesn't carry BBC or BBC America on ANY of their packages, and we're not allowed to get a Direct TV dish in our building... Is it true there's no way to get my BBC on cable? That seems crazy! I mean, it's not a huge deal, but it's about 50% of the programs I watch lol.
  • What cable company have you spoken with? I have Optimum/Cablevision for cable and internet. In particular, I have the family package and channel 104 is BBC World.
  • Yeah, that's BBC World News, right? I mean BBC America programing like Top Gear, Dr. Who etc.
  • You can get most of that through itunes, pretty cheap too.

Welcome to the neighborhood, I'm in the hood to the east, Crown Heights. I think both are great places to live.
  • Hiya. I live real close (Lincoln b/w Underhill & Washington).

    Best food around:

    • [*:dbbda6df16] The Islands (Caribbean)
      [*:dbbda6df16] Chavella's (Mexican)
      [*:dbbda6df16] Bogota (Columbian)
      [*:dbbda6df16] Tom's Restaurant (Diner)
      [*:dbbda6df16] Beast (Small plates)
Go to the Grand Army Plaza farmer's market on Saturday mornings/afternoons.

    Nerdy things in broader Brooklyn:

Cablevision is great for supplying UK shows on demand in a timely fashion... via .torrent. Their service for the otherwise hard-to-get TV I like to watch is so good that I cancelled my cable TV with them.
  • Thanks, guys!

Ya don't get me started on that - I have CV as well and was equally heartbroken to learn they don't have BBCA. I moved to Brooklyn a few years ago in the middle of a deep, deep Footballers Wives addiction and have never recovered. Call and complain like I did...maybe enough voices will get them to consider adding it!
  • dont quote me but due to the recent switchover to Digital from Analog channels, CV is getting rid of many older non digital channels..
that will allow CV to add a lot more HD channels..
there is for example a BBC America HD channel
that is what you ought to call in to request ;-)

Agree with all of the above.
Amazing ice cream at Blue Marble on Underhill
    Amorina-Great Pizza on Vanderbuilt.

personally I like Washington Commons (Bar) on Washington Ave.
  • Chavella's really does have the best mexican food in the neighborhood, if not the whole city
  • better yet if you want to stream BBC 1 or 2 live from your PC for you free go here

That's hysterical. This neighborhood has it's charms - Mexican food isn't one of them. Chavellas is passable, but barely. The only other mexican in the neighborhood that I know of is the California Burrito place on Flatbush which is fairly terrible.

Go a couple blocks into Park Slope and Rachel's Tacqueria on 7th is ok and Chiles & Chocolate is better (although more on the Oaxacan mole heavy tip than typical mex).

To get great mexican food though you have to go out of the neighborhood to the places in South Slope/Sunset park or for a nicer atmosphere to Bonita in Ft. Green.
