Getting Information About Contractors — Brooklynian

Getting Information About Contractors

Ever noticed that when you visit the NYC Department of Buildings web site that there are a number of items there to direct contractors to info about handling complaints and violations, but none to tell consumers about where to go to find out which contractors have racked up the most complaints and violations? Is the DOB just a playgound for achitects and contractors that is paid for with our tax dollars?

It seems that a contractor's license can never be suspended or revoked, under normal circumstances. The violations just don't count up like they do for drivers, etc. One contractor operating out of Staten Island owes the city over a million dollars in back fines, but she is still in business.

Any ideas on this?

  • In all seriousness, I think we're screwed. NY is all about siding with developers under Bloomberg, with rare exceptions.
  • A few minutes ago I got a call from the Department of Consumer Affairs. Said it is not their area of concern. Huh? Run that by me again.
