have folks sampled it yet? dropped in last night. they have some absurd items like octopus salad for $35 a pound, but for about $35 i walked out of there with a very tasty salami and provolone sandwich, a half pound of couscous, a half pound of zucchini, a few slices of herbed leg of lamb and a quart of espresso gelato. really tasty.

  • I certainly wasn't too pleased with that shop yesterday evening. There's a bus stop right in front of their store. I was waiting for the bus during the rainstorm when a box truck pulled up. An employee from the store ran up and told the driver to back up, right in the middle of the stop! Why someone gets a delivery during rush hour is beyond me. So of course a bus approaches and has to go around the truck, blocking the center lane of Flatbush. There was an elderly lady who needed that bus but she had mobility issues. I helped her off the curb, onto Flatbush and into the bus. NOT COOL LARDER!!! I still had to wait for my bus and that's when I went over to the driver and employee from Larder and let them know how dangerous it is to impede traffic on an extremely busy street and to block bus stops. Just then someone from transit? walked up and started issuing a ticket. that's probably the first time I was happy to see somone get a ticket. Note to Larder, tell deliveries to park on Bergen, you can walk the few extra feet and not annoy potential new customers.
  • sounds like an easy mistake to make since they've only been open 3 days.

to blame that entire situation on the store seems a bit far fetched to me. their delivery people don't work at the store...that would be more the fault of whoever was delivering.

that would be like someone blaming a resident on a fed ex truck mishap out front of said persons house.
  • i dropped by last night. bought some cheese, chocolate, and bread. very nice place with friendly and knowledgable staff. interesting assortment of food items. the only problem is that most of their stuff is EXPENSIVE, even by hoity-toity new york standards.

  • So expensive!! Did buckle down and by a pack of 5 salted Nunu caramels... for $7. I draw the line however at a $7 can of tuna. The sandwiches look reasonably priced at $8.50, though I'm afraid they might be tiny. And I KNOW it's on the PS side of Flatbush, but I'm claiming it as our own.
  • Very disappointed in this place. Unimpressive selection and way, way overpriced. Cashews for $16 a pound? $12 for a jar of pickles? I'll continue riding the train to Sahadis.
  • had one of the sandwiches today...the beet greens and ricotta salada one. it was absolutely delicious! one of the best sandwiches i've ever had. i thought that they had a beautiful selection of food. comparing to sahadi's is apples and oranges. it's much more similar to blue apron foods, but i prefer bklyn larder.
  • I finally got to check it out today, and that store is amazing. It's not cheap, but the product selection is great. Although the cheese collection is small, it is well curated, and you can tell by the "cave" that they're serious. The prepared foods looked terrific (no surprise, given the Franny's connection), and the space is nicely designed. I agree with belzjm; it's more like Blue Apron than Sahadi's, but I like it better than Blue Apron.

I got a salami and provolone with hot peppers sandwich and it was delicious. If you're expecting a Bensonhurst-style hero loaded with meat, you'll be disappointed though. It was more European-style, with a nice balance of each element, with really good olive oil. The bread was crusty and tasty (I think it's from Sullivan Street Bakery), and the pickled veg was fantastic. It was $8.50, and worth every penny. I will definitely get it again.

All in all, I think the store is really well thought out, and a great addition to the neighborhood. I think they'll be very successful, even with the current economy.
  • I'm locking this thread so we consolidate the Brooklyn Larder discussion with the other thread on the Park Slope board.
