Don't be discouraged that a flood of people haven't responded. And good luck with your move from LA...
Just to get started, go onto google, type in "bars 11238" and hit return. 11238 is the zip code here. Google will spit out a map with red dots showing all the bars. If you zoom in on the map, google will also show where the subways are and the Park. The formal boundaries of the neighborhood are Flatbush to the west, Atlantic to the north, Washington to the east and Eastern Parkway to the south. Now type in "restaurants 11238" ...
Next you can search this site for old conversations -- people seem to spend most of their free times talking about restaurants, condo development, gentrification, safety, street noise, etc. etc. etc. -
Hey there,
Thank you very much for the reply. I will go do that right now!
Only thing i havent been able to put an answer to is how far it is from Brooklyn College , and what is the ethnicity majority here? I am Russian, and want to live around all types of people, all kinds of food ect.! -
For transit, the 2 Train that goes to Brooklyn College has three stops in the neighborhood -- Bergen, Grand Army, and Eastern Parkway. Then it's maybe a 20-minute trip to the College. (Check out this helpful map!)

Diversity? I think this is one of the more diverse — and mostly friendly — neighborhoods in Brooklyn. For a sense of the good, the bad, the ugly and the sometimes funny, search this site for the word "gentriconfrontation" -
And, you have the B/Q at 7th Ave. While neither will get you easily to Brooklyn College, you'll be a straight shot to Brighton Beach, home to a large Russian immigrant population. We all like diversity, but every so often we all need something familiar.
Good luck with the cross country move! -
I live in Prospect Heights and think it is the best neighborhood around. I think you would enjoy it here since I seem to see many young couples living here.
Living here you will be close (walking distance) to the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and Prospect Park. There are great restaurants here and almost all offer delivery. We are very close to 5th Avenue and Smith Street (restaurant rows). There are lots of little shops around as well as big box stores.
As far as Russian people you may find there are more Russian Jews in Crown Heights than in Prospect Heights but as BKChickie said its a short train ride to Brighton Beach where it is called "little Odessa".
Best of luck and hope to meet you at one of the Brooklynian gatherings -
Prospectus, BKChickie, and Stacey. THANK YOU. You have all been a HUGE help to me, you have no idea!!
I truly appreciate all the feedback. I think i have made my decision on this!! Will be doing Prospect Heights then! -
Oh great! One last question so far! Do you guys who live here in PH recommend any apt. buildings, or brokers? I have been on craigslist, but not having the best of luck....
-
You can surf the classified adds for free on the NY Times website. Or, when you're in town, walk up and down 7th Avenue in Park Slope (the neighborhood just south of us). The street is lined with real estate brokers, and they'll show you the apartment listings they have for free... you only have to pay if they have something you want.
-
There was another apartment-hunting thread here recently, and someone recommended using "North Park Slope" in Craigslist to find Prospect Heights apartments.
-
Oh great idea. Thank you

BKChickie wrote: There was another apartment-hunting thread here recently, and someone recommended using "North Park Slope" in Craigslist to find Prospect Heights apartments.
Good idea, since most of the places listed as "Prospect Heights" are actually in Crown Heights (east of Washington).
Keep a tab with Google Maps open while you're browsing listings and check where these places actually are. -
Right, I have noticed that I type in Prospect Heights and I am getting "Prospect Heights/Crown Heights.. ect.
And almost none of them are PH.
So Prospect Heights is west of Washington then? -

Yes.

I was in on the other apartment thread where the unending borders issue was brought up (again) and I just signed a lease for a place on Park btwn Underhill & Washington. Just around the corner from my place now (woohoo!!), but it took a solid month and a half of searching through every listing to find a place that was *actually* in PH. Almost all apts on craigslist listed in PH are actually CH these days.
Best of luck to you. You might also want to check out www.streeteasy.com for rental listings. Shorter lists than craigslist, but there are some worthy apartments there sometimes. -
Thanks Underhill-_MT! Ive noticed that, its been a bit of a run around with these people.
So I found rapidrealty, and figure they can possibly find me a place in ACTUAL PH, since my heart is now set on here!! Its a broker "n fee" service, ha but we will see about a no fee, right?!
Have you guys heard of them? Do they actually place apt.s in PH? -
Rapidrealty owns some big (crappy -at least on the outside) apartments in PS. I'm sure they have places in PH too. You don't have to pay a fee to look at a place.
When searching Craigslist, your best bet is to search for North Park Slope and you'll end up with listings for PH proper. Messed up, but true. -
^^^Mamacita's right, rapidrealty owns bldgs and they also have sort of vulture-esque "agents" who show independent landlords' units. I was stood up by 2 separate rapid agents in the month and a half I apartment hunted and a 3rd hounded me by phone until I told her to stop calling me. I'm sure they're not all bad, I just don't know anyone who's had a good experience with them. Also, the non-stop-calling chick tried to show me a place on Classon that she insisted was PH and not CH. Frustrating. I hope you have better luck with them.
-
Oh man jesus.... do you reccomend any other realtors or brokers tohelp me find a place to rent in PH?
-
The border being Washington Avenue is not etched in stone. Carnivore and others simply repeat it as incontestable fact, but it's not agreed upon by all.

Even if you don't think the border is Washington you have to agree that Rogers Ave is NOT PH, as many listings by Rapid and others would have you believe. For that matter, neither is Franklin. -
Jack Krohn wrote: The border being Washington Avenue is not etched in stone. Carnivore and others simply repeat it as incontestable fact, but it's not agreed upon by all.
True. Many realty agents and some homeowners such as Jack Krohn who live east of Washington claim a border further east, serving their financial interest. They think that if they say it enough times it will become true.
Western Crown Heights has a lot of positives as a neighborhood also, and it's potentially worth looking at some places east of Washington to get a feel for the neighborhood. Just don't let them fool you into thinking it's the same as places west of Washington, and definitely don't pay Prospect Heights prices if you take one of these apartments. -
okay so what would u all call the real actual borders that make up prospect heights , so i look like i know what i am talking about to the rapid realty agents, or anyone else broker wise?
say i am looking at the googlemaps, what actual streets and borders would i look for, when checking out these listings? -

As Prospectus said above, Atlantic, Washington, Flatbush, Eastern Parkway.

West of Flatbush = Park Slope
North of Atlantic = Forte Green
East of Washington = Crown Heights
Real estate agents and people living east of a border will try to push the boundaries further east, but don't believe them. (Park Slope is more $$$ than PH and PH is more $$$ than CH) I live 20 feet or so east of Flatbush and I don't pretend that I live in Park Slope. It's sad when people feel the need to do that.
You will find that Vanderbilt Ave is the heart of PH in more than one respect. Aim for that general vicinity for a real PH experience. -
Ah, carnivore and madman. THANK YOU. That gives me a perfect view of where it is now.
thank you, thank you! -
How about between washington ave and albany ave. ?
what area is this considered? So many places are advertising it as PH. But is it crown heights, or is that lower? -
That is Crown Heights. While there is a fight over the area between Washington and Franklin (some think its PH, most agree its CH) anything east is clearly Crown Heights.
-
That area between Washington and Albany is Crown Heights between Atlantic to the north and Empire to the south. South of Empire, it is Prospect Lefferts Gardens west of New York Ave and East Flatbush east of New York Ave.
-
Okay great. got it.
Its amazing how literally every listing I have found, on rapid or CL, is right in the middle of Crown Heights, NOT PH.
-
It's a small neighborhood and a pretty stable one, so there's not a ton of units available.
You should check the New York Times and Village Voice listings too. You just have to be fast and be ready to go see the apartment the day that the listings appear, and ready to put down a deposit if you like it.
