Halp! Kitteh Kwestion — Brooklynian

Halp! Kitteh Kwestion

My kitty has a sore/ raw area on his chin/lower lip area. It doesn't look like cacne (cat acne) more like he has just rubbed the spot raw.

Has anyone seen this before?

I don't want to drop $200 at the vet if i don't have to.

  • Have you noticed him rubbing it on the carpet or anything? A little antibiotic cream might help.
  • the only thing i have seen him rub on is his ceramic food bowl but that is only while he eats and doesnt seem excessive.
  • Perhaps he is trying to rub off all the places you've touched with your dirty sponge hands.
  • Don't worry about it at least for a week. My cat sometimes got what looked liek a cut under his chin, I'm not sure how, but it always went away.
  • Kitteh herpes.
  • sometimes certain ceramics can cause allergic reactions in cats and dogs, but if he's been eating out of his for a long time and there's been no problem that's probably not the case here. a dental problem or even a bug bite could have caused him to rub or scratch. just keep an eye on it to make sure it's healing, like you would if it were on you--especially if it's near his mouth. don't want it getting all foody and icky.
  • Not sure if this would work on a kitteh but aloe vera does wonders on people skin. You can get king aloe vera plants at your grocery store for $2.00 per stalk (worth a try and better than $200.00!).
  • I am with Beave on this one - a little antibiotic ointment. Can you try cleaning it first with some hydrogen peroxide? If there is a bit of bubbling there is some infection and you should use the antibiotic ointment. If there is no bubbling, it is not likely infected and you can just clean it until it starts to appear less irritated (mild soap and water on a little cotton swab). If at that point it is still not better - vet.
  • can you take a picture of it?
that might help us figure it out...
  • How is the kitteh? Have you tried any of the remedies?

I forgot to mention if you are feeding him wet food from a deep dish the residue might accumulate on his chin. If he does not get it off quickly it dries and it becomes more difficult for him to clean it off - hence an irritation.
  • i've wiped it clean with soap and warm water and it seems to be clearing up.
    thanx
