Hi,

I just moved to the area and am looking to adopt a kitten- does anyone have recommendations for good shelters or other such places to adopt?

Thanks!

  • But of course!!!! Check out our Pet Board here on Brooklynian.

    Also, check out my favorites:
Petfinder, Kensington Kitties, Empty Cages Collective and there is always local shelter (just google it). There are many kitties that need a home at this time of the year. Let us know how it goes!
  • I love Kensington Kitties and have done some fostering for them - however, I don't think they'll adopt single kittens. Many places want you to take 2, unless you already have a cat.

Come out on Friday, I'll help you pick the right one :-)
  • christina, are you volunteering there?
  • what does it take to volunteer? are you working with cats or dogs or both?
  • Both, but you can stick to just either one depending on your preferences.

Basically you need to be over 18 and show up for an orientation. After that you just put in 9 hours a month and that's it. It's very rewarding work and it helps me getting the "I want to have a dog" idea out of my head because now I have so many, but none that I need to take care of every day. And YES, it is possible to leave there without an animal!
  • ooh, send me more info vie email, pls! i'm interested. (but will i want all the cats? that worries me)
  • Now is a *great* time to foster or adopt a cat or dog. This is the peak season, when the shelters are literally overflowing and desperately in need of folks who can save a critter or two.

See Animal Care & Control (this is the city shelter system):

Also Petfinder is great, where you can search by exactly the type of animal you are looking for:
