Has anyone else encountered the Unicycle Man with Dog?

  • I've seen him a couple times now. Always makes me smile.
  • Yes, many times, but he's never made me smile. He's going to cause a major accident one of these days...
  • Almost everyday. I think it looks scary (to be on one wheel and have a dog on leash), but he manages quite well and has for a very long time. It lets his very energetic dog run and burn off some energy. He's pretty agile on the thing and can hop off while moving with no apparent trouble. Would I do that? No, but he hasn't caused any harm that I've seen so I'm not too worried.

yup. I see him in the park all the time.
he's probably less dangerous than the average ped/bike/car since he's actually paying attention
  • segway man is his mortal enemy

Why do you think he's going to cause an accident?
He seemed pretty in control when I saw him riding with another biker.
  • Every time I see this guy I wonder "how does one learn to ride a unicycle?"

I guess I'm the only one who has almost been mowed down by him just walking out the door of my building. He tends to ride on the sidewalk, which is crowded enough as is. I don't care that he does it, I just wish he would either do it in the street with the rest of the cyclists or go to the park. The sidewalk is not the place.

By the by, why did the OP start this thread??
  • He's almost mowed my family down a couple of times.

Wish he'd unicycle off the sidewalk, but guess that's too dangerous.
  • Eh, there are also plenty of bicyclists who almost mow people down, too. He's just more memorable :)

And I love the look Segway guy has on his face as he rolls through that busy GAP intersection.

And while we're on "guys", who loves to hear Opera Guy? I think he lives near our old apartment and I miss hearing him all the time.
  • i admit unicycle man struck me a few times

    with old-timey charm
  • I didn't realize he was riding on the sidewalk. Shame on him!
  • I'm sorry, but I dislike "look at me I'm on a U N I C Y C L E!!!! man". Maybe he's in complete control but I hate the wobbly way he lunges towards me on the sidewalk or in the park. But dislike or no, I suspect he has every right to look like an idiot, so be it.

And the segway man post made me almost pee.

Isn't that sort of the whole point of learning to ride a unicycle? It's not like it's a practical vehicle for transportation, and the novelty would surely wear off pretty quickly. By learning to ride a unicycle, one makes a conscious decision that one wants to be that guy.
  • Oh, I know some folks who are considering ditching their bikes for unicycles for a practical reason. They work in the very southern part of Manhattan and the building has no bike parking and bikes are not allowed in the elevator, but they can take a unicycle in (I have no idea of the reasoning, just a huge building with lots of rules).

It sucks b/c lots of them want to bike to work and can't. The company even tried to buy some parking spots in garages in the area for employee bikes but the garages won't allow them to put bikes in there.

This sounds like MY office building, both location and policies. Care to share address?

I, however, park my bike at 55 Water Street. I pay a monthly fee, but the trade off is that I easily work exercise into my day :-).

BK I am not too far from you on Wall and Broadway and they created a whole section inside the building for us to park our bike. PM me if you want me to find out if you can park it here (for free). I personally would love to ride to work each day but there are no showers here and I cannot stand to be in sweaty clothes at work

Your friends can thank John Liu for dragging his feet on bicycle parking in commercial buildings via Intro 871/Bicycle Access Bill. Send him your thoughts here:

The giant waffle building, southernmost in Manhattan, by the ferry station. I think these guys (I think only the Manhattan ones want to bike to work) would happily pay if they could just park at/very near work-I mean, the bosses looked into the company *buying* Manhattan parking spots. Is 55 one of the HIP buildings?
  • That "giant waffle" is likely One New York Plaza. I used to work there. Weird building, is right. I'm amazed the elevators didn't kill me (they were seriously malfunctioning)
  • BK. I work at 55 Water.. How much does it cost to park the bike and where do you park it?
  • simsali wrote: BK. I work at 55 Water.. How much does it cost to park the bike and where do you park it?
If you have a building ID, the parking is free. If you don't have an ID it's $50/month. Kinda sucks, but it's the only way that I'm going to bike to work (my building doesn't allow bikes inside and has no facilities for them).

There are a couple of racks in the parking garage, on the second level down. Seems pretty safe.
  • Couldn't you just lock the bike up on the street? For $50 a month you could buy a decent commuter bike every 10 months (or replace any vandalized parts)...unless you have preference for a fancy bike. Just thinking outloud.

Interesting idea, but I pay for parking only during the good-weather months, so that's probably about three or four months of the year (this year June was a washout).
