(the?) manhattans

The space is almost exactly like Ripple used to be, with some minor changes in the back. It's still dive-y and welcoming. The dj booth upstairs is no longer being used, and has been turned into an office. Music is varied and comes from either the bartender's ipod or the jukebox, depending on when you're there. Drinks are mostly $5-$6. Tracy (the proprietor) is awesome.

Love it. Great when its early and quiet, great when its late. Love it. LOVE Tracy (and my fiance knows it!).
-
Tracy is a great guy - good place, but sometimes gets weird really late at night since so few people tend to be there...but it's a good time.
-
lovely. i'll have to check it out. thanks all

Has anyone been recently? I tried to go around 6 p.m. on a Saturday a couple of weeks back and it was closed. Not with just the door locked, but gate pulled down closed. I was worried they'd already gone out of business. Did they change their hours, or was that just a one-off fluke?
-
Several of us were there on Friday night after the midnight bike ride and it was definitely open. The door was locked and we had to buzz to get in, but the gate wasn't down.
-
The biz plan for this place was written on a bar napkin that has long since been thrown away. The newspaper on the windows and the cub scout buzz me in thing is dumb. No regular hours posted is annoying and a recipe for another failed venue.A hard time from the fire dept the first time around would seem to be on the schedule this time around also.I have tried after reading posts to go there but always the same some kind of funny stuff with the gate down at 6 or the door locked with the gate up.Sepia,Washington Commons,95 south, and Franklin Park are all options within a blocks of this disappointment. All have similar prices, clean bathrooms and the ability to get out the door in case of god forbid an emergency. Are these people for real making there place hard to get into and out of for a bottle of beer.McFly people are trying to give you money, don't make it so hard.

You've missed the point on every possible level. -

I agree with catwalkertexasranger. I went to this place once and had to be buzzed in, only to find the place empty. The beer selection was unimpressive and the interior looked like it had been stripped. The owner was nice, but nothing about his personality warranted him being called "awesome". All other bars in the area manage to keep regular hours and don't see the need to have a locked door (is he afraid of the area's residents?). The paper on the windows looks just plain stupid.
Having said that, I hope they stay afloat. I'd hate to see a local business fail so quickly. -
Wow- I'm VERY not happy about hearing that it might shut down.
That said- to people who don't get why he puts the newspaper up and why he has a buzzer when it's not "paradise" inside. The fact is, he doesn't want certain people in there- people who could cause problems (i.e.- Ripple crowd- although I've tried to explain to him that crowd wasn't bad).
If you can get past the paper and the grim (the bathroom gets a little too nasty for me, I'll admit) then you're family. If not, fuck it, he couldn't care less.
BUT- as far as the hours go- this is a late night hang, not a 6pm hang. Shit, I honestly don't think Tracy's even AWAKE at 6pm.
Oh, and he IS awesome. It's actually good to get to know people before publicly judging them. He's my friend- so back off. -
Please tell me he's not invited to the wedding...

Uh, I told him there'd be a hot blond who was dying to meet him....

I already met him more often than I wanted to, thanks. If you were referring to me that is...

I love the place, and the proprietor, but it's a recession.
A lot of the places in the nabe will not weather it.
A lot of the nabe inhabitants will leave as rents and property values continue to dip.
Anyone who has traveled the country and seen what happened from Jan. 2008 to March 2009 (and present) most everywhere else will understand what is coming home to roost.
Those who haven't will think this is crazy talk.
Time will tell. I don't like it, but it is true. -

What's his problem with "the Ripple crowd"? I've read quotes where he described it as being a "shady bar" but I don't get what his problem was. Admittedly, I hadn't been in Ripple for a while before it shut down, but I don't remember it really being a terrible place either. Or, did it become something like what happened with Barette, with a lot of dealing going on?

Honestly, I'm not quite sure. Ripple sometimes would get some broke asses who'd sit at the bar and just ask for $2 of Henny. I think Tracy was/is gearing the place towards the old Siberia crowd, who do live amongst us. They're coming out- just not in droves. Maybe Tray thought that his Manhattan crew would be out all the time... -

I've never been to Siberia so I'm not familiar with what that crowd was or is, but if I'm reading you correctly, he wants it to be some sort of non-hipsterish, punk (for lack of a better term), dive-bar-y, primarily white scene. Or am I wrong on this?
I hope so, but if not, given the demographics of the neighborhood, the guy's nuts and I really don't feel bad for him if his bar goes out of business. In fact, as they say, I'd think it'd be an addition by subtraction. -
He shut off the PBR tap, so definitely not trying to draw in the hipsters.

I dont know about all that but I have been there twice, each time with my husband, and those who know him know he is the exact opposite of what you describe, and both times Tracy and the bartender (whose name is escaping me now) were very friendly and accommodating to us. -
I am often confused about the angle people start from. Are ex-Ripple customers like cats ,you feed them once and they keep coming back?If a patron asks for a quarter drink the answer is the same as it would be for a 2 worth of Henny "we only sell Henny in 2 sizes 6 dollars for a single and 12 for a double".Every bar in the area does it the same and they get rid of people they don't want not through selection but through isolation. If a guy comes in trying to sell a pocket full of 8balls and nobody is buying, they leave. After 3 times and no takers they go to where the yes' are drinking. The old dudes in front of his bar would be welcome anywhere I am.If I get you right,he goes to a little cut in the newspaper and looks out and says"go away, this ain't Ripple no mo". I only commented after beautiful women friends wanted to meet there at@7pm and because of their exclusion or inability to figure out the doorbell system,we walked in the rain to Sepia .Where we enjoyed drink with people that used to drink in Ripple. In a recession you open your doors earlier, with more attention payed to things that are cheap like customer service, and frequent customer discounts.

Anyone know if it is open tonight? I would like to pay my respects.

Ditto for me as well - well, except for the husband part since I'm an unmarried dude, but I digress, but also that was before he started forcing people to be buzzed in.
I just don't get why he'd be doing that, nor why he'd be so negative on a bar that I used to really like. In fact, Ripple used to be my "corner" bar until I discovered Sepia, which replaced it. -
i've only been there once, but i liked the place and felt very welcomed. i'm not super-cool (in appearance, anyway...) or the kind of person who would be whisked into exclusive establishments or anything like that. our crowd was skewing decidedly dorky (if you were there -- oh, no, not YOU
).
the buzzing-in is unusual, but nobody seemed to be getting turned away or anything. in fact, it was kind of nice to get greeted as we came in.
the gf wishes the actual alcohol selection were a little better, and i can't say she's wrong about that.
i also don't get the ripple-bashing, but i've only seen one quote in the press about it -- maybe it was out of context or who knows what. -
I stand by my statement, watchuwant and will not back off making any statements about him, his establishment or anything else!!!!!!!!! And there's NOTHING you or anyone else can do about it!

Sounds like the place is not for you. In fact, it probably doesn't suit a lot of people. Which, although not great for business, is part of what makes it such a good place to hang, and in fact the only place I like to go back to regularly. Will be really sorry if, as looks likely, he has to close. -
this place looks and is presented the way it is because its suppost to be cool and secret. No one is afraid of the area's residents and that is not the intention.
I think people are too sensitive. The guy used to own a bar in a subway station that was frequented by drug addicts and he looks like a complete crazy person. Im pretty sure he isnt worried about the locals.
The other bars in the area have a wide range of individuals who frequent them and everyone has fun. -
