St Johns Place @ Washington Ave - Crime, Community, Etc.
Friends,
My wife and I are looking at an apartment on St. Johns Place between Washington Ave and Underhill (closer to Washington). We live in Brooklyn but don't know this area very well.
How are the crime/drug/safety issues on St. Johns Place? Daytime, nighttime, for people, for vehicles. Any opinions would be really appreciated.
Second, I've read some entries about Public Housing units on this block being converted. Is there currently Public Housing on this street or nearby streets?
Thanks in advance on your comments. This message board has been a very helpful resource for us.

The Brooklynian should start selling crime data. With all the people looking to move here and wanting crime information, much money could be made. -
Maybe I can sell my three step safety plan:
1. Be generally sober
2. Don't wear an IPOD or talk on your cell phone to the degree that you are distracted.
3. Especially avoid doing the above at 3AM, while attempting to buy weed. -
walk around on a friday night - you'll see everything you want to see & more.

Thanks Vanilla. Good idea.

We live on that block. We feel mostly safe between the hours of 6 a.m. until around 11 p.m. or so. After 11, head up, ipod off, keys out, know whats going on around you.
There is a lot of general loitering by those that are un or under employed during the day, but it's really not an issue. There are however a ton of teen / pre teens running the block. They can be quite aggressive, and a general PITA.
Search the board for Underhill and St. Johns if you want to find out specifics. -
I lived on the corner of St Johns and Wash for a couple of years but moved out of the city last month. The good things are:
You are close to a laundry and 24h corner stores. Because of the corner stores there are always people outside so safer than more desolate areas of PH. Close to subway and frequent buses to Atlantic Mall. There's a parking garage 1.5 blocks away towards Franklin.
Some bad things: there are a few guys who walk their pitbulls of the leash. Some people sells drugs but it is not in your face so not really an issue. People throw trash on the street so streets get cleaned twice a week.
Friday night in the summer time there's usually some people partying outside the laundrymat. -
Dear Niner,
Thanks. The building we're looking at is 318 St. Johns. I heard the NPR story about the serious bedbug issue at 349 (or, at least the story made it sound serious). A few here and there is part of Brooklyn life, but the NPR story painted a picture of an unresolvable epidemic at 349.
Is there a bedbug problem on the whole block? Do you have any comments about 318?
Thanks so much! -
that block and area have been transforming pretty quickly in the last six months. i don't feel unsafe and i like the businesses that have opened. i say go for it.
-
We never had any problems with bed bugs. Just don't take any furnitures you find left on the street. Even furnitures with no soft parts, like tables can have bugs in the corner.
Not sure which building is 318. Your neighbours in the building will most likely be a mix, some residents who lived forever there and new people like you. -
I have a neighbor downstairs who has lived there for 12 years, and at present he owes the landlord a ton in back rent. He will not vacate the apartment until he is legally bound to, and the landlord refused to do any sort of maintenance/pest control.
I have been down there. You can see the bedbugs in the couch. They looked the size of roaches! Now I know where I got them from... A nightmare to get rid of. -
I bet it's safe to say CoffeeCoffee will not be moving to PH after this weekend.
-
Never say never! But yes, it definitely answered some questions.
-
On the plus side to any fearing the bedbug issue- the landlord gave me a free months rent AND paid for a new mattress- so I hope I didn't sound too discouraging!
I have been here 4 years, and the area is changing exponentially for the better.
Howdy, Stranger!
