According to my friends who grew up in the area you could NEVER walk that stretch at any time of the day and be safe until the past couple of years. -
Ishtar apparently your friends didn't grow up there during the 1950's and early 1960's when the area was quite safe. There were no muggings or shootings then.My dad would come home from work at 2 A.M. on the Franklin Ave. shuttle and walk from President St. to our apartment on Carroll St.It was safe and a great place to grow up.

Summary of this thread regarding Franklin Avenue:
50's to early 60's: safe
60' to around 2004: unsafe
2004 - present: some signs of gentification, but not yet safe. -

This sounds about right. My friend grew up in the area during the 60s and 70s. He moved in the 80s when it became REALLY bad. Like FAP bad.

We are talking about south of Eastern Parkway, right?
Franklin north of EP is a different story. I don't know anyone who lives here who would consider it particularly unsafe these days. If you have just rolled in from Kansas it may seem 'different'. Shit happens every so often but that's NYC. Otherwise the neighborhood is lively, friendly, diverse and generally awesome.
Cannot speak for south of EP as I do not know it well enough. Although those I know that live there seem to like it. -
"Franklin north of EP is a different story. I don't know anyone who lives here who would consider it particularly unsafe these days. "
So all the shootings that have happened on F.A. north of Eastern in the past month or so don't make you feel unsafe?
I'm just wondering because it occurs to me that some people are really muscular or wear bullet-proof vests or are just so inherently badass that they may feel safer than others.
I know I feel somewhat unsafe, but I am none of the above things. -
There are shootings all over New York. Including Manhattan. Unfortunately that is NYC.
All of NYC is unsafe if you are the target in a shooting. If not you have more chance of being knocked down by a bus.
I do take your point but I think it is more a question of perception than likelihood. -

Yeah, my point is, if shootings don't make you feel unsafe, what does? There are muggings all over New York too. (btw, the homicide map from the Times makes pretty clear that our general area of BK has a *much* higher frequency of those types of crimes than most other parts of NYC)
I guess I don't feel particularly unsafe, but I think it does have an impact on your general quality of life and the vibe of the hood. I'm sure most people are glad the mobile police tower has been on F.A. for the past couple weeks, but I bet even more would prefer it not have to be there in the first place. -

I wish cross-posting wasn't broken so I could "best-of" this post! -
...I'm flattered.

Did anyone ever answer your question, Sterling?
Anyone know what when down?
People can explain away the recent uptick in violence (or make light of it) as much as they want, but in the 2 years I lived here before Wall Street blew a $2 Trillion hole in the economy, it was a pretty safe neighborhood (only 2 shootings I remember, one of which involved a cop after someone threw a brick at them from the top of a building on Union).
The 9 months since have been a different story, and one that's been increasingly violent. I'm sure this isn't the only neighborhood where this is happening, but it's still cause for concern. -

The only place I know to look at stats to compare whether or not there is an uptick in violence, at least for reported crimes, is on the NYPD's stats page: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/crime_prevention/crime_statistics.shtml -
Something else went down on the same block early Saturday morning the 25th...around 9:30 am there were ambulances and cops with one guy getting loaded into a patrol car with another guy with a freshly-bandaged hand being frisked near the ambulance

That's interesting- this is EM26's block. Last year at the same party a young girl got shot. Great party! -

That shooting wasn't at my block party last year! Our block parties are peaceful, thank God.
The shooting was at the block party a week after mine, on President street. I don't think they've had their block party this year. Prolly they won't after that incident. -
Aside from the bodega on the east side of Franklin just south of the 99 cent store-- which is always teaming w/ dealers-- Franklin itself is rowdy but safe. If yr not involved in 'the trade,' then really no one's gonna mess with you. We've been on the corner for 8 years and have yet to be messed with.
If you live on the south side of EP, develop some sort of relationship with the bodega guys, the businesses on your block, and (especially) Sal & Mohammed @ sal's.
The blocks between Franklin and Bedford and Franklin and Classon/Washington can be grimey; Union btw Franklin and the Museum especially. Pretty sure it comes down to just 4-5 knuckleheads but there are always-- i mean, nightly always-- grandoise moments of idoicity and violence going on on that block. -

That actually is my block. From what I understand, the perp wasn't from the immediate neighborhood, but from the Ebbets Field projects, though that's still pretty close. The really crappy part about the whole thing - beyond the little girl getting shot, of course - was that it happened about half an hour after the police had just agreed to let it continue for another hour more past the 8pm stopping time of the permit. -

I live on Carroll between Franklin and Bedford. On the way home from work I tend to take the B/Q because I absolutely hate getting cat calls at that bodega south of the $.99 store. I actually dread getting off the trian on those days I don't take the B/Q. Other than that, they don't bother me and I've never had an incident in the 4 years I've been in the area. Say hello and keep it moving. -
I moved to Union between Franklin and Bedford a few months back, and it's a pretty nice mix of older residents, younger folks and families.
There was an awesome block party this past Saturday that was well-organized, very friendly and very kid focused -- soccer and football in the street, inflatable bouncy things, kids bombing around on scooters, fantastic food, booming islands music (and some Michael Jackson, natch) and little to no booze. Plus, the whole thing ended on time and the street was pretty well cleaned up by the next morning.
It was great to take part in such a wonderful event, given some recent happenings at block parties gone awry (i.e. St. Johns in PH)... -
