NOW THAT I DO KNOW THE FRIVILOUS CALLS THAT YOU MAKE I WILL PERSONALLY GO THE 77TH PRECINT MYSELF AND SPEAK TO ALL THE HIGH UP INDIVIDUALS THAT I KNOW PERSONALLY AND BRING WITH ME A COPY OF THESE IDIOTIC IDEAS JUST TO LET THEM KNOW WHEN THEY ARE BEING CALLED UPON LYING NONSENSE WHEREAS THEY CAN BE NEEDED SOMEWHERE ELSE PREVENTING A SERIOUS CRIME FROM BEING COMMITTED PLEASE GET A LIFE AND STOP INTERUPTING OTHERS
P.S. Before he just claimed to know folks at the 77th, now he claims to actually work there.
...you gotta love PH! ...and helicopters. -
In his mind, "work there" might include some type of unpaid community liaison type thing.
-
maybe he works cleans the offices.
we may never know....
P.S. Cleaning for the city is likely a good gig. Nothing wrong with that. The world needs hard working people. -
i thought the same thing when i read "kids safety day...BYOBB!"

Well, for the full monty, click here. It's a great way to see how the "child safety day," was advertised. Perhaps he'll announce our community meeting here too...

btw, LOL @ "pulsating rap music" on the previous page
-
There was some extremely poor judgment on the organizers part for certain - not least of which was inviting a dj named 'dj shotta kid' to a child safety event.
Never the less, no matter how poor the judgment in retrospect, no one on our block went into this wanting this to happen - not Mike, not anyone.
Still no word from Det. Maclain about aug. 1. -

good call. ...come next summer, hopefully the 7th one either will not occur, or will occur under different leadership and supervision.
Block parties CAN be good things. -
maybe you should only be allowed to go to a block party if you live on that block? just a thought.
-
The City had better hope the the parents of those victims don't decide to sue. They may have indeed have a case. For years, people have complained about the "block party." It was only a matter of time before something terrible happened. You have a city that willingly gave out a permit, despite prior bad acts. You have drugs, alchohol, and party promtoer masquerading as a block president. The city gave out this permit without looking into the circumstances of why so many members of the community didn't want it to take place. And then you have the MySpace ads for the party that clearly show that it was never really a "kids safety day event." No police presence until after the murders occured. Any good personal injury attorney worth his salt could build a compelling wrongful death suit. At the very least, the family could file for damages in civil court.

not practical or enforceable.
...maybe one should have to describe the event as a street fair if one is going to invite a huge number of people and throw a large event.
Something approaching Atlantic Antic, or the 5th Ave Fair.
...chances of them approving such an event on a small block: 0
...you might have to sell it as something else instead. Maybe, I dunno, "child safety day" or something. -
"not practical or enforceable. "
yea. oh! how about no more block parties? -
mr. met wrote: "not practical or enforceable. "
There has to be some middle ground between "Shootout at the OK Corral" and "no more block parties." Summer block parties are a Brooklyn tradition, and we shouldn't have to lose that.
yea. oh! how about no more block parties?
How about a block party that starts at 10am and is over by 6pm, with police presence on the block during and after the event to generally keep the peace, and to disperse people at 6pm and make sure the audio equipment is shut down and carted away as scheduled. If this is really for the kids, that should be totally reasonable. -
There will NOT be another block party on St JOHNS PL for a loooonnnnngggggg time. The party days are over.
-
ditto on the above.
But, perhaps with some basic structure, the event could survive:
A. light enforcement of the alcohol rules (kegs for example, would be banned).
B. Events that reach the level they have sponsors, or cost money to get into, have to produce proof of liability insurance.
This isn't rocket science.
For example, the Panama Day event that takes place in Mount Prospect park every year. Loud, fun, big stage with music, family oriented, lots of BBQ, around 5k people, and -yes- Police presence.
The little park survives every year. (the squirrels hide in the trees and the dog walkers avoid the park for the next week to avoid all of the chicken bones, but it is all ok in the end).
...maybe this "block party" event could be moved there. ...and the organizer could abide by all of the related rules.
P.S. Invite McGruff the crime dog for extra child safety points.

BYOBB? It's a kids event! It was irresponsible to have people bring alcohol to the block! What the hell were you thinking?! You're the host of this event. You have your name on the add.
Did you approve the message?
Of course you did! You wrote it!
Mike Jones you should step down as the block president. You made a bad decision in running an event of this size. If the city was the host people would be screaming for the mayors head.
Step aside and let an adult take the reigns.
What are street teams and what "work" are they talking about? -
Street teams are promoters.
Ex: http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/evg/1272021435.html
http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/tlg/1266704728.html
http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/evg/1259513674.html
...Mr. Jones was likely recruiting street promoters because he wanted them to pass out his flyers. ...although he is stating that they could get rid of their present work (flyers) at his event. If you are a promoter, you want to distribute flyers at events that are similar to yours... -

howdareu wrote: People want solutions and answers to problems behind a computer screen, it's not that easy. Leg work must be done. So we can go back and forth until we are all tired, and a few of us as always are going to pound the pavement and actually get work done. God Bless.
You must be pounding alot of pavement whily you're sitting at a desk, cruing the boards, on company time. -
howdareu wrote: Yes there is a formal meeting planned but we want to make sure your there because you didn't come to the precinct meeting at the church in may. So we were planning Aug 1st at the church on the corner of Sterling and Underhill I hope most can make it.
I would hope howdareu is having flyers made to post on all the buildings on St Johns Pl about when and were the "formal" meeting is. If nothing is posted, no one will know and no one will show up. Not everyone
on St Johns Pl is on the Brooklynian or Myspace. -

Jones' MySpace profile is (now?) set to private. Is this a recent change? I wanted to see the original post.
Doesnt matter how the 77th makes it happen, this shit on this block needs to stop. From the mass gathering of kids all night near Underhill, to the shootings near Washington.
Why dont we have a regular patrol on this block after 9 p.m.? They can put up to 4 officers to lean against the wall and play on their phones in the 2/3 station, but we cant get a cruiser every hour? I'd even settle for one of those creepy ass police towers. -
Prospect Heights= the new Crown Heights. =D>

izisharp wrote: anyone else perplexed by how poor of a writer one certain person is on here?
I think attacking howdareu for his or her poor grammar and bad spelling is the wrong way to have a dialogue on this forum. I want howdareu to answer questions and post responses. Petty attacks will just make him or her angry and unresponsive. -

Ditto.
And blame for the murders is clearly unfair as well.
If I controlled the conversation I would like it to focus on the block party itself.
It's publicity as a "child safety day" vs. actual programming
It's method of crowd control
It's volume
It's responsibility in cleaning up its mess.
It's failure to provide adequate porta-potties
...its obvious that the murders were (how do I say it?) "unplanned", but how do the organizers and residents of the block think that the rest of the event went?
So far the posters on this thread have been largely negative. Surely some folks had a good time? ...or was it so poorly planned and over attended by drunks that no one had fun? -
Okay, not to defend Mr. Jones (because I do think his event is not worth defending), BUT we have to keep some things in mind.
For a NORMAL (neighbors out BBQing, kids riding bikes, no concert speakers block party) there are no requirements for
1) Crowd control
2) Trash removal
3) Porta Potties or access to bathroom facilities
Those are all issues that arise when there are larger types of events (street fairs, festivals, concerts, etc)
So in discussing the event we need to separate what should be done for future block parties vs. what should be done for events of this kind, because this WAS NOT A BLOCK PARTY.
See here for application which details what types of notification are needed for various types of events.
