In fact I recall that the comment wasn't too complimentary about a post made by a moderator. Is this the new gestapo at work?

I didn't see the post in question but I will ask what became of it.
If a post has been deleted it's usually due to somehow violating the site rules (you know, like spam, personal attacks / name-calling or other mean-spirited provocation etc.)
Perhaps whatever it was was deemed to run afoul of the overall "Be Nice" site rules and was deleted as such.
Even if a good and reasonable point was made in the comment, if it was couched in other unacceptable language and rhetoric it might be subject to deletion.
Or it could have been a simple mistake, who knows.
But I have no idea about this one, so I'll find out.
