Wing Wars
Went to Oceans 8 pool hall for the first time. Their AC was crankin' and it was an oasis in what felt like Phoenix. 2 beers and a house vodka drink 26 bucks for a round.Lots of space and ping pong, air hockey and bowling also. I am not good at any of their sports but vodka makes me feel at the pro level in all of them. What, I said,WT,why are chicken wings so jacked here and across the street next to Sharlene's? A half chicken is cheaper than 6 wings? Maybe I just don't know my chicken. Should the wing be the most expensive part? I should have known when I fell for these things they were like chicken crack, you can never get enough and you never have enough cash to pay for what you want.

I agree. Chicken is delicious.

The best chicken wing deal is Hood Hing on Underhill between Sterling and St Johns. Those guys may not know how to make real Chinese food, but they can fry the hell out of a chicken wing, and will sell it to you for less than any of the dedicated wing spots. I haven't tried their buffalo wings, but the regular fried wings are great.

Thanks for that tip - Wing Wagon does not cut it!

oh man, you're missing out. their buffalo sauce is the best part. they actually have good fries, too. -
Good wings or no I take a principled stand against buying food from people who serve it from behind bulletproof glass.

Why? Those folks are just trying to make a living. The glass is there to protect them from criminals. So why punish them? -
I agree with homeowner. These workers were willing to open a restaurant here when no one else was, and they are open late 7 days a week. They are many times more at risk than an average NYPD officer, yet you wouldn't scorn an officer for wearing a bulletproof vest.

Considering that it's also the hang out spot for most of the hormone-flooded teens in the area, I believe the bulletproof glass is the right way to go. Now I wish I'd tried their wings when I lived over there. I'll just have to find an excuse!

I love hood hing and their affordable ghetto chicken wings and fried rice. Don't get to indulge too often these days..don't want to gain back any of the weight I've lost over the last year! My son loves 'em too! Won't be no hood hings in Long Island where he's moving soon.

i've always dug Wing Wagon's XXX Hot wings. Are you seriously saying the Chinese spot on Underhill does wings right? Honestly? I'll have to taste it to believe it.
-
I guess I'm just jaded at Wing Wagon because they refuse to deliver to where I live stating the deliver guy has been robbed there.

I wouldn't scorn a police officer for wearing a vest, but I wouln't buy food from a police officer either. It's about welcome/hospitality priorities. Bar Sepia is a block away without bulletproof glass, Sofie's is right next door without bulletproof glass. The Islands are a block away and they don't have bulletproof glass. A restaurant, even a takeout restaurant should be making their customers feel welcome. Barricading yourself inside isn't the way to make me feel welcome. -

Actually, just to clarify things, Hood Hing has been around longer than Bar Sepia and I'm guessing you meant Cheryl's (?)... and possibly The Islands (not sure about that though because I'm not sure if I heard about them just after they opened or just after my roommates discovered them). They just haven't renovated. Why they haven't renovated is a question only they can answer though I wouldn't be surprised if it's a not-broken-why-fix-it kinda mentality, or it might be a rent on the location has gone up but they keep their prices down type deal. Who knows? But, they have it because it was necessary when they opened.

OK, so I got a few orders of their "buffalo wings" the other day. They're ok, but they're definitively NOT BUFFALO WINGS. They have a sort of sweet, mildly spicy barbecue sauce on them. But barbecue wings are not buffalo wings. Honestly, I prefer their regular fried wings. In the future, if I want buffalo wings from Hood Hing, I'd mix up some melted butter and Tabasco and order up some of their tasty regular fried wings and just toss them in the sauce. -

Tabasco! (GASP!) No no... you need Frank's RedHot. That's Buffalo Wings. Or at least in my experience.

Fine- Frank's Red Hot for the purists.
But definitely not barbecue sauce. -
buffalo sauce = frank's red hot + butter

Man. I've lived half a block from Hood Hing's for a year and never known, and now I'm moving to Boerum Hill. I am going to eat the everliving shit out of those wings tonight.

Make sure you get the regular fried wings! I'm pretty sure the secret ingredient is crack.
