Sometimes doing the right thing in life isn't always the easiest - this logic fails to make the act of a child being hit acceptable by my standards.

To assume someone smacking a kid is their parent fails to acknowledge the possibility they are a nanny or other trusted person who is doing this behind the parents back. I feel sorry for the kid who was being hit as you just watched and walked away.

Two years ago I was a supermarket in my old neighborhood when I saw a child dropped a closed bag of chips on the floor. The parent shouted at the kid saying "what the f* is the matter with you" while proceeding to smack the child across the face. I was in horror! The kid was sitting there crying.. I told the kid it was alright, and asked what the problem was with the adult. Yeah, it began an argument in the store and words were exchanged. About 45 seconds into it, the kids mom showed up who was apparently shopping for groceries while the nanny was watching the kid. The mom was horrified at what happened and told the nanny she'd never lay another hand on the kid and that she was lucky she wasn't going to press charges. I assume she was fired by the way the drama unfolded.

You can sit back and ignore things around you, thats fine.. that's your nature. Myself? I can't stand to see a helpless child be hit.

Jay-walking is a crime. Littering is a crime. Going 31 mph on a NYC street is a crime. Double parking or parking next to a hydrant is a crime. Riding your bike without a bell and light is a crime.

You've got your work cut out for you!

No one pisses in the street or lets their kid piss in the street unless it's a last resort. Unless you see a repeat offender, cut them some slack! This isn't the same as seeing someone abusing a child.

Ichan Christian didn't smack his kid, he smacked his girlfriend's kid. Also, he left bruises and scratches on his victim's face which xlizellx already acknowledged was illegal, so you've not at all refuted his or her claim that it is legal to spank or smack one's child. I myself am unsure of the legal status of such behavior; could you please link to the law in question?

i'm going to have to agree with booklynian on this one... because for me walking from just underhill to the 2/3 train at GAP, this parent(s) & pissing child scene has gotten out of control. i have been seeing boy & girl children pissing on the sidewalk on a more regular basis. perhaps because i leave for work just after the morning rush hour? who knows. but it's kind of gross and furthermore, this is brooklyn: walk across the street, buy a small coffee/tea, use a cafe bathroom.

I heard the tree really liked it.

Oh wow- so ONCE you witnessed a person who wasn't the parent hit a child. Well, good for you, you earned your angel wings. For the record, I never said that I sat back and did nothing (I was talking about the experiences I've heard about), so don't go talking shit about people you don't know. You don't know shit about my nature.

It's kind of gross that unlike in most large cities in civilized nations, New York doesn't provide public coin-operated self-cleaning conveniences at regular intervals in the street, and people are forced to beg at private establishments.

I would be severely disappointed if New York City did not smell like pee.
