Cablevision Problems with Telemundo
After waiting many hours for the Cablevision tech, he told us the problem wasn't with our modem or connection. The explanation: Telemundo began broadcasting a digital signal from the top of the Empire State building. Apparently, their signal is interfering with Cablevision's frequencies. This is happening all over Brooklyn, at least according to this guy.
I know the FCC recently allowed the networks to digitally broadcast their signals. Plus, our service went down around midnight which was supposedly when the transmissions began. But - it seems a little hard to believe. Two of our neighbors have the same Cablevision package and they haven't had any problems.
Has anyone had the same experience with Cablevision?

Cablevision is fucking awful. This is a company where they feign concern and technical expertise. You start off with phone tech who make you turn your cable box/modem of and on several times and nothing gets resolved. Then a techie arrives at your house, tinkers with some wires while speaking with their significant other on the cell, and report to you one of the following: "It has to be fixed from the street", This is happening all over Brooklyn", and my favorite after nothing is accomplished, " I won't charge you, even though I just fixed something we're not responsible for. And, the problem has A) to be on your end,
to be looked at by a trained supervisor once I file the paperwork.
My guess is you're going to get the same experience with alike companies. DirecTv started out beautifully wanting my SS# to see if I "qualify" for their free packages.... -

DirecTV checks the credit (via Equifax) of all their new customers. If your credit is super ridiculously awful then they'll ask you for a (refundable) deposit when you start service, otherwise you get the "free" offerings - like free equipment, installation, etc. I think all the satellite companies do it.
I will say - I'm two weeks into being a DirecTV customer and love it! -
Thanks for the posts. Indeed, the Cablevision tech DID say that the problem originated on the street. This morning, the "engineering department" showed up and looked at the modem, etc. We were considering having another TV in our office but decided against it; just in case we changed our mind, Cablevision had installed a splitter a couple years ago. So...the engineer guy notices the splitter and disconnects it. Ah-ha, all our problems disappeared (phone, internet). The engineer guy says that it was the splitter that interfered with the frequencies, thus allowing the Telemundo interference to take place. Why the other two guys didnt notice this is beyond me. Three days without phone/internet because of a splitter? Ridiculous.
However, I found a sure-fire way to get Cablevision's attention. I called back and told them I was switching to Verizon FIOS because they claimed to have twice my internet speed (a true fact). Sure enough, I got a supervisor on the phone and he tested my computer: I should be running close to 25-30 and it was barely registering 12! So, the 'supervisor department" arranged a special appointment for me tomorrow to solve the speed problem and promised that it would get fixed.
Formerly, we had Verizon DSL years ago and it was a nightmare largely because their service people were useless on the phone: I once waited 2 hours to get a live person. So...Verizon isn't really an option. We can't turn to DirectTV (coop rules prohibit it) so we'll see what happens tomorrow.
