I also found a good way of avoiding that hill: biking clockwise in the park.
But, but, but - if you go in a circle, you have to end up at the same elevation as where you started - you're just trading a longer, less steep hill for the one you'd normally have.

Clearly you need to join us for the drinking part in order for this to make sense.

So from a physics perspective, you're doing the same total work, but don't have to generate as much peak force.
That assumes our legs' energy efficiency is independent of power output. I think we had a similarly nerdy discussion about this with respect to batteries after a previous midnight ride.

Heh - I've been commuting via bike the last few weeks and I'm not in good enough shape for too much extraneous riding at this point. Soon, though.

True! "Extraneous" is the key word - I've got about a 15 mile round trip a day, right now (4 or 5 days per week, crossing the Manhattan bridge each way - oy), and my legs need the recovery time. I'm hoping that it'll start getting easier, soon...

I take my prior post back: whyfi doesn't need to drink with us
....beer googles are clearly already being worn.

  • i'm in pretty bad shape, and i can attest that everybody takes their time on these rides. i barely broke a sweat.

no excuses people! this is not a fitness thing. it's a thinly veiled excuse to drink. the way it should be.
