  • I was there on Sunday. It's worth the trip, the food is very good, there is a huge selection (there are like 20 olive oils to choose from) and the seafood is very fresh. I still like the convenience of Fresh Direct, but there's a lot to be said for taking the time for picking out stuff yourself. They also have a small cafe there. The checkout lines were a little slow, the cashiers are still getting the hang of things, but there's a big parking lot and everyone's pretty friendly.

Mrs. C and I just went (thanks for the ride, Armchair Warrior!). The selection is really good and the prices are a mixed bag- some amazing, like $5.99/lb for jumbo shrimp, some meh like De Cecco pasta for $1.59 when you can get it for $1.39 from FreshDirect. The place is kind of poorly laid out, so there's no obvious path to take that will take you through every section. You really have to wander around. Also, the staff definitely doesn't know about what they're selling yet. Example- at the deli counter, I tried ordering Mortadella, but the woman had no idea what I was talking about. After several minutes, which involved her getting her supervisor, she pulled out a shriveled brown piece that looked like it had to have been sitting there longer than the place has been open. Needless to say, I didn't want it. Then I tried asking for Serrano ham and was met with a blank stare. "You mean Virginia ham?" I wound up not getting anything from the deli section. They also don't have the giant walk-in meat cooler section like the Harlem store.

Overall, a great place to have around, but much room for improvement.

  • Subject: OK w/ kids

I have 3 kids under 3 & I am thinking about making the trek w/ my kids & babysitter this week. Is it kid-friendly? Wide enuf aisles for a double stroller?
  • is it stroller friendly? God, you could drive a tourbus up and down the aisles, they are so wide...we went Sunday AM as well - totally prepared to scoff at the yuppies getting totally lost in Red Hook and paying top dollar for food that they could get at the corner Key Food - but we were surprised! VERY cost competitive...
  • Subject: ain't no fresh direct in red hook

wow a $.20 price diff might break it for you.
but since fresh direct doesn't actually deliver in Red Hook the Fairway is my green/golden palace!

and while it might not be intuitive, the 2nd time i went there i knew just where i needed to find everything and i was in and out of the store super quick.

It's not a ton, but it is almost 15% more. If I buy about 100 boxes of pasta a year, that's $20. And that's just an example of one (relatively inexpensive) item. I just wanted to point out that you shouldn't assume they're cheaper for everything. They actually do better pricewise with some of the more expensive stuff.
I like the store and plan to return ( although Red Hook isn't that convenient for me with no car). I was trying to be balanced and recognize the strengths and limitations of the place. I'm sure the staff knowledge base will also improve once the place is open longer and they've had more time to train.
