Hockers Chicken Bones — Brooklynian

Hockers Chicken Bones

Hey gang!

I'm new to the board and feel like I found an oasis for being able to find some solutions, peace, and insight into the conditions, nature, and future of the Flatbush area! Thanks for being here.

My first question is:

Why does nearly every person have to spit huge hockers CONSTANTLY all over the sidewalk? It's like a mine field! It's so disgusting. I've never lived in another 'hood where people do this to this extent.

My next question is:

Are there any programs in place to help dissuade the neighborhood inhabitants from throwing down their trash and chicken bones with complete disregard? I'm amazed at the active participation in making the neighborhood as trashed as possible.

These questions may seem rhetorical or just to make a point, but they are not. I am really searching for an understanding and/or a means of intervention to make the neighborhood a better place. I want to confront or say something to someone who is so openly littering and spitting, which are both illegal, but I only tried this once and it did not go well. There seems to be a serious local pride in living in trash.

Is this something we just have to accept if we want to live in Flatbush area?

Thanks!

LOL, well, I just now found this board... nearly 2 years into my living in Flatbush. That's hilarious. I'm presuming this means it is a permanent part of the culture? Yeesh. How gross.

Judge not and ye shall not be Judged, spoketh the Lord.
  • Verily I say unto you go forth and spread your chicken bones and trash so that all might knoweth your Lord's Greatness!

Hmmm, please don't be offended. I'm not sure if encouraging consideration for shared space and an encouragement away from illegal activities in the community is "judging." And is there any other word but "gross" for describing having to step in/around hockers and chicken bones?

Okay, now that is funny.... and seemingly very accurate to the means of showing devotion in this 'hood.
  • spitting is illegal?

(reminds me of a subway sign from the 40s that my dad always recounted--"if you expect to rate, don't expectorate")

    Thanks for posting that!

One can't imagine why something like this would be illegal until you live in a neighborhood like Flatbush where it is incredible how much it takes over the sidewalks and streets. Amazing.
  • It IS disgusting... I live on Eastern between Washington and Classon and people just sit on the benches eating chicken and throwing the bones on the ground. Better yet, a lot of times for added fun, the whole box of leftover crap will be left sitting right on the bench.

Not only is it filthy and disrespectful but it invites rats and all kinds of other gross buggers. I have to constantly watch my dog when I walk him, so he doesn't try to eat chicken bones and get his poor throat or intestine punctured.

It's absolutely nasty. And hocking lugies? Nothing nicer than looking at that shit decorating the sidewalk...
  • You can see No Spitting signs @ the Subway Museum on some of the old cars. Spitting has been around for a while.
