Neighborhood Pharmacy?
Hey all
I was wondering what people's feelings are about the various non-Duane Reade pharmacies in the neighborhood.
There is the one on Washington across from Tom's, the Kings (i think) on Flatbush across from Crunch.
And just outside of the hood, there is the one next to Chavella's on Classon and one on Fulton a block East of Washington.
Any others?
I'm trying to find an alternative to Duane Reade in the neighborhood and would love to hear of people's experiences at these pharmacies.
Thanks in advance.

there is one on Washington, next to Islands-Key Food.
...looks like it comes from the 40's. But always has a prescription when you need it. -
There is a great one, very friendly and courteous, on the northwest corner of Eastern Parkway at Bedford - S&D Nature's Pharmacy. Relatively new, as in it opened a couple of years ago. Head pharmacist/owner has made effort to get to know each of his regular customers personally and has even walked the few blocks to our apt. to deliver when my wife as on bedrest with a rough pregnancy.
Of course, it's in Crown Heights. -
King's on flatbush and Neergaard are quite good and have most RXs in a pinch.
-
neergaard is great if you need something at all unusual. i have one scrip that i always get filled a the 5th and 10th location because no one else will order that drug for me. it's way too far for me to go to regularly, though. (i only get about one refill a year on that scrip.)
i will never go back to kings because they were fucking assholes when i came in asking whether they would order that scrip. (i would have understood "we can't", but i don't need a lecture from someone who knows zippo-nadda about my medical history, etc.)
thriftway -- the place next to chavella's -- has a really nice pharmacist (anastasia has gone out of her way for me and been great when my insurance has messed things up, doing the leg work with them but also calling me when it's done rather than telling me to check back myself). unfortunately, they also have really crappy hours. i go there for my regular stuff, but i do find it inconvenient that they're not open on sundays and close so early (7, i think) on weekdays.
swan -- franklin and st marks -- have been nice when we've come in for little things, but we haven't used them regularly enough to have a truly informed opinion. -
Sorry to hear you had a bad experience at Kings', sweet tea. It's my new favorite store. A wee bit closer to me than DR, they have all the homeopathic pellets my doctor loves to recommend to me, and if you get an affinity card (the little keychain thing they scan with every purchase), you ACTUALLY SAVE A LITTLE MONEY, every time. Which is so much better than DR's totally bogus system of accumulating points towards a $5 coupon that expires!

I like Kings for everything but prescriptions. I had a script w/refills there last year. In the six months that I went there, they botched it twice (they gave me the wrong variety of the medication). Once (after I called in the refill, was told that the med. was in stock) was told when I arrived at the store that, oops, it wasn't in stock. Isn't that why they take your phone number?
What I didn't like (as was mentioned by another poster) was the way that they unilaterally made a decision to substitute medication (I'm not talking about generic versus name-brand, I'm talking about one variety of a drug versus another) w/out asking me first. -
I'm sad to hear that some ppl have had bad experiences with King's. I like King's! They were good with my prescriptions, I like their selection, I've had nice service there, and I like that they're a bit 'old school.
-
Kings took my script yesterday, said it was ok if I came back in half an hour. But didn't tell me until I returned that they were out and I'd have to come back today. Think I'll try somewhere else next time.

I've had that happen at Kings multiple times. I go to Duane Reade now. -

I don't want to derail this too much but I'd just like to know if you are familiar with homeopathy and how it is supposed to "work". If you know all about it and decide that it's what you want, so be it, but if you're talking homeopathic pellets based only on a doctors recommendation then please research homeopathy and decide if it's really the way you want to treat you medical problems.
Hope I'm not too out of line saying this. -

I want to like King's a whole lot more than I do. I like the fact that they're a local chain, and I also like the "old school" thing, too. The store on Flatbush is well-organized, clean, and well-stocked. I just didn't like how they handled my prescription, so I won't go there anymore for that.
I was somewhat thinking that maybe they messed up my prescription multiple times b/c they didn't like filling "those" kinds of scripts (birth-control pills) and would rather have me go elsewhere, but since I read that this has happened to others, I'm kinda relieved. -

As usual, incompetence is far more likely than conspiracy.

Perhaps I am giving them too much credit.
And, I also want to point out that my pharmacy problems at King's are confined to the Flatbush Ave. branch. I haven't visited any other stores, so perhaps those are better managed. -

Yeah, I think you are, a bit. My doctor is a fully qualified MD who also has studied alternative medicine. So when I had pneumonia, I got antibiotics, but also used a homeopathic remedy she suggested, which actually stopped me from puking every time I coughed. I don't think there's anything wrong with that...

I just wanted to make sure that you knew the principles behind this type of medicine because a lot of people I have met seem to think it's synonymous with "natural" or "holistic". I apologize if I offended you. -

God, I forget the name- but I LOVE him- he's really nice and totally hooked me up with an Rx when I had NO insurance. He's awesome and I'm loyal.

Richard at Ludwig's Pharmacy is a saint or something like that. He bends over backwards to try and explain medicare/aid to his elderly customers. He is always willing to help out. Knows most of his customers by name. It is just a shame I moved out of the area. -

Yes! Thank you for the name, Sir Eccles- he is indeed, a rare man among men.
