Gen? Washington and St Marks.
-
Cool, their menu has it! thanks!
-
I can second Gen. 659 Washington Ave
(between Bergen St & St Marks Ave)
The owner is actually japanese which isn't as common as one would think regarding japanese restaurants. They serve traditional homestyle japanese dishes as well as sushi/sashimi. -
Taro (on Dean off of Flatbush) also has it.
-
Gen is closed. For good or just on Mondays? So getting Thai next door.
I'll try again next time! -
It's a Monday thing - sorry, forgot about that.
-
I went to Gen last night too...and it was closed, so I went to Geido...
-
Geido is always packed. Was the food good?

Gen > Geido

Taro > Gen >> Geido

Taro is okay but it's a sushi joint mostly, as opposed to a place serving japanese cuisine like Gen.

Their tempura udon is great. -

Good to hear as that's exactly what I wanted. -
As udon is a traditional Japanese dish and Taro is a sushi joint it's safe to say that the udon at Gen is way better than Taro's. Sushi is a fad here, and only eaten on special occasions in Japan. My friend used to waitress at Taro and I love the place but it's not a place to go for udon, or any other homestyle Japanese dishes. Taro is a great tapas/fusion restaurant. Gen is a place to go for Japanese food, including udon.

Have you actually tried it at Taro? -
i've had both taro's and gen's, and while in principle i agree that gen is the better place for non-sushi food (and that taro is better for sushi), i prefer taro's tempura udon.

i find all manner of ramen to be alarmin' but try these eastern delights from geido
soba zuri... chilled buckwheat noodles... perfect for a light summer meal
chowan mushi... hot savory custard warms your heart
chicken udon... yummy nippon noodles swims in a perfect ocean of broth
but be warned the negamaki with cheese...
east struggles to contain west in this epicurean prison
Howdy, Stranger!
