Kitty ear schmutz
I need to know how to safely clean my kitty's ear gook/stuff/tar whatever it's called. A few months ago my vet said she had a bacterial infection and gave medicine to clear it up. does anyone know how to clean a kitty's ears properly? I know to use a q-tip but is there a solution to use as well? How far in the ear do you swab? I don't want to hurt my beast. Thanks all.

We had this with Mia and the vet took care of it. I can't even tell you how many q-tips it took to get out the schmutz. It's not something I would want to undertake myself. The vet gave us eardrops which we gave to her for awhile afterward, but then Mia got wise and would run away whenever she saw us coming with the bottle of eardrops.

We had to first clean with either peroxide or alcohol (can't remember which one) on a gauze pad.
The cat was not thrilled and we would have to "cocoon" him in a towel and he yowled through the entire procedure. After most of the gunk was removed, then we had to squirt in the medication and rub.
This lasted for two of the longest weeks of this cat's nine lives - but at least he regained his equilibrium. However, whenever he would see us headed for the medicine cabinet he would bolt. -
^"cocoon him" is also known as "Kitty Burrito"

Ahhhh - which explains why he would fly out of the towel like someone put hot sauce on his butt!

I wouldn't use alcohol or peroxide because it could damage the ear. There's a pet otic solution you can get at any pet store. Squirt a few drops in each ear, massage, let cat shake head and then gently wipe the inside of ears with cotton ball. You can use it up to twice a week or as recommended by your vet.

I would not pour the peroxide in the ear - it was on the gauze pads. NO Q TIPS. Although now that I think back this was probably suggested more due to the cuts from his continuous scratching than actually getting the gunk out. I wish I could remember the name of the med in the tube - had to use it on the dogs as well. Yellow and white tube . . . . senior moment.
