Attempted mugging on Park Place — Brooklynian

Attempted mugging on Park Place

So Saturday night around 10:30pm, our downstairs neighbor was mugged at knife point outside our building. He managed to chase the guys down and another good Samaritan came out to tackle the guys so my neighbor could get his bag back. Pretty insane. Apparenlty the cops said that there's been quite a few attacks on our street lately as it's not quite as well lit. They suggested walking in the street at night instead.

I didn't see any other recent posts about this, so I thought I'd give a heads up. Saturday night Park Pl is generally pretty populated, especially so close to the 7th ave stop, so I am somewhat surprised.

Hope everyone travels safe and keeps an eye out.

  • Park Place and where?
  • Anybody fighting or chasing somebody who just robbed you with a knife is ...... and for the a backpack and or it's contents is high. Leave these people alone they are human garbage and their game is to see how long they are free in between prison and jail visits. Stupid things said even by the smiling face of law enforcement should be dismissed with a smile or "that sounds crazy". Walk in the f@#$ing street in this area is what some chump does who is trying to be run over. Walk on the side walk and hope that the thug pants that are half way down already fall the rest of the way and you can get home. Yo Barney move your tower to Lincoln, next day Park next, well just move it. Guns and pounds of dope are being moved on every corner and the police response is to suggest a street walk. Lets raise taxes to get more of this please. These little cop watch towers are a great idea, it's not peewee's club house to smoke a pack and watch dvd's. The bad guys are breeding in front of their eyes and walking in the middle of the road is tough on you but not on crime.
  • For your information, there are NO POLICE! 10,000 less cops since 2001 and whats left are fighting Terrorism. The Police force is stretched so thin, resulting in over worked exhausted Officers. I'm actually surprised that theres not more Crime do to the state of the NYC Police Dept.
  • I remember going to a Community Precinct Meeting for the 77th a few months ago. Com. Ray Kelly was there. He basically said all the a very good portion of NYPD cash is going to fight Al-Queda with no plans to hire that many extra police.
  • This is not a new thing on the stretch of Park Place between Carlton and Underhill or on Underhill generally . Look at these blasts from the past:

My advice to you is 1) to ask all neighbors with external lights to turn them on (and keep them on) at night, and 2) ask folks with trees or shrubs that hang over the sidewalk to trim them so that lighting and visibility is increased. Walking in the street with out these two things happening is only going to make you a more visable target for those lurking in the shadows. I'm a big fan of external lights and consider the money that I pay to keep the front of my house well lit at night protection for myself and my neighbors that come home late and alone.
  • i mean me personally dont think fighting anybody with a KNIFE unless you have a gun is a good idea - unless your hulk hogan and the knife wielding bandit was mini me..

no material item is worth getting your life ended over !

    Between Carlton and Vanderbilt.

I walked in the street tonight. I felt pretty silly and much like a target.
  • We live on the block and haven't heard of anything like that recently. Thanks for the heads up!

Was your friend on the phone or listening to an iPod?
  • last night as i was walking home from work, a car pulled over and slowly started following me, the dude starts trying to call me into the car, saying
"sweetheart, come over here sweetheart, a minute of your time..."
mind u its 1245 am, and im on the phone, but its on speaker in my pocket, not visible, and i tell my bf that there is a man in a car tailing me, and the car speeds off. It was scary, but i guess he thought i was calling the cops or something. this was btwn classon and franklin.
    ppl are crazy.
  • Other than Franklin Park all the way to one side, that stretch of Park is pretty barren... feels more industrial with th eparking garage on the south side. I'd probably avoid it late at night.
  • ^ franklin park is on st johns. park is mostly residential.

The block OP is referring to is the block between Carlton and Vanderbilt (same block where the B/Q stop is). You are thinking of St John's (a couple blocks south) between Classon and Franklin (several blocks east). The block in question has the barbershop and the mighty, mighty meatwind on the corner and is composed of mostly brownstones until you get closer to Vandy where there are apartment buildings on both sides of the street.
  • i think ntfool was referring to discoabbie's post.
  • My bad...

There will surely be alot more. Crime stat can only do so much when the stats are juked and the funding is being bled dry.

Hate to sound like JAH but how much is your condo goign to be worth when you're getting jacked for your teething rings every time you try to take a stroll for some soy milk.

10.7 unemplyment ain't going away next year and the efext is two fold: lower tax base for the city leading to lwoer po0licing and 2) a higher crime rate because people at the lower-earning end of the economic ladder have fewer options.

See the posts in the "is $360 for a condo worth it?" thread from last year.

Discredit it this year but, a long view will likely be the most accurate view.

I grew up in Detroit in the 80s, maybe that makes me too pessimisitic.

The one thing NY has in its favor is the new urban movemement. But the so did '57.
