Too early? The heat thread

Anyone have their heat turned on yet? I'm thinking of giving my landlord a call but I love a hot apartment.

  • You beat me too it. My LL said that the thermostat was all set and as soon as it was cold enough it would kick in, but that's not what happened b/c we have it set to 72 and it was only 68 in the house.

I hate having to ask for heat. It makes me feel like a beggar.

There you go. Click on image for full size.
  • ^i know what the law says, but the convo is always awkward.
  • Ha! i hear the heat kicking in now. Yay, heat! Come on, heat!
  • Sorry, that was just to put it out there so we don't have a whole thread on what are the regulations and all.

Personally, I get cold easily so I've been wanting to buy one of those super soft throw blankets for when I watch a movie on the couch. My toes and hands are perpetually cold through the winter. Sucks!
  • Yah, some people don't know the law, so it's handy to have.

I have a heating pad and a space heater. I'm a delicate flower, in case you didn't know :flower:
  • the heat in my building came on yesterday morning, even though i didn't think it was especially necessary. this morning it was so warm in my apartment that when i stepped out into the hall i almost went into hypothermic shock and had to run back in to get a jacket. i wish i had more control over it. i think to keep the first floor at 68 degrees, my apartment (on the top floor) winds up getting heated to about 85 degrees.
  • I really wish they'd revist the 55 degrees at night rule. Nobody is going to be sitting around in pajamas and no socks at 55. 55 is cold! Give us 60 at least... And shouldn't the girl in the picture be in bed already?!
  • of course she should be in bed. we should all be in bed, under many blankets, and that's why the heat can be down. if you choose to stay up reading barefoot at all hours of the night, that's on your chilly hands, not your landlord's.
  • 10pm is pretty early to expect everyone to already be asleep and buried under multiple blankets. There are a lot of shift workers not even getting home until then or later.

I understand the rationale of allowing it to be colder at night, I just personally think 55 is a bit low, that's all. Last winter was my first with a cheap landlord who likely follows this rule to the letter, and I found it hard to get to sleep some nights because it was so cold in my apt.
  • Yeah.. it's too early.

We live in the North East... not North Dakota, not the fucking North Pole. It's cold here sometimes (we call that Fall and Winter).

During winter you have to wear things (we call them sweaters and jackets.) At night you have to get under something (it's called a blanket).

That heat you so enjoy costs people money... it costs your landlord and that results in higher rents. It costs this country and that result in soldiers dying in a desert half way around the world protecting oil fields.

So, yeah, it's too early to start complaining. Just move to Virginia.

I think 55 is too cool, so am glad my LL has the night heat at 60 or 62. As for 10pm, it takes a while for an apartment to go from 68 to 55, so I'd guess that you're not hitting 55 until after 11 or 12
  • 55 is too cold but at least there is some sort of reg, I guess. I'm sure there are folks with horrible LLs who have to fight for that.

Me, I'm a wimp. Even today I broke out the smartwool bottoms to go under my pants. A must have for any of you that have to spend much time outside like me (I spend 1-2 hours in the park every morning), you'll appreciate this product as the temps drop:

If it's 68 at 9:59pm, the temp isn't going to fall to 55 by 10:00pm...there's a lot of residual heat in buildings.

ETA: Duh, didn't mean to repeat what Flexi just said....thats what happens when I go to get coffee in the middle of writing a post!
  • I took a long walk/gimp before in yoga pants and my butt was COLD. Of course my stomach was warm, because that's where my fat is :-)

Damn...it's just the opposite in my apt. By the time the bottom floor hits 68 the top floor (where I am) hasn't even started heating up and the system shuts off because the thermostat registers the bottom floor. Add to that leaky windows and a top floor breeze and it gets mighty chilly up there.

Um, sounds like you need some alpaca socks and gloves. Crazy warm and very soft!! Mom is sending a shipment tomorrow so let me know!
  • Three dog nights already? Gotta get me and Rocco two more snuggle buddies!
As much as I love kittehs, they don't generate the hear that doggies do!

BTW - the kitteh is my thermostat - - if she is curled up around my head, I know the temp in the dwelling has dropped below 62. If she is UNDER the blankets curled up by my feet, it is below 55.
  • I'm dreading having the heat kick on. I have all my radiators turned off but there's one in the living room that doesn't shut off. I'm on the 4th floor and it gets so hot I have to keep my windows open all winter long. What a waste. Wish I could control it.

Aahaha, my heat is on now. For me that means I have to open my windows. Huge waste.
  • ok im ready for some heat now
  • Mine came on a few days ago at 4am for an hour. That was is it.

I'm freezing ,as always , but luckily for me I have my favorite SpongeBob blanket that I wrap around myself .

Also, got these for my feets:

    Soooo comfy!
  • i dont even usually get cold but theres been not even a hint of heat thus far and its pretty cold in here. I ran the oven for a few hours today to warm up the house
  • My landlord threatened to evict me for asking him to turn on the heat when I called yesterday. I'm freezing, but thank the gods for the fireplace and the electric heater. Temp inside my apartment yesterday was 60 @ 8PM.

This is a yearly struggle and nobody should feel badly about asking landlords to comply.
  • LTT, that sucks. My southern blood is happiest when the thermostat reads about 78 (that's not what we get, but would if it were totally up to me!) so 60 sounds bad to me.

The flannel sheets made their seasonal debut last night and I slept much better for it. They hold the warmth so much better than my thin summer sheets and I think everyone with [lack of] heating issues should try to get some.

Get good ones--they are worth the money b/c they'll last for many years and the added warmth is priceless. I got a queen set for $99 at Bed Bath (they only had these and one other much cheaper, thinner option for flannel) and these fit our 15 inch mattress fine even after a wash and are super soft and cozy.
  • ok im cold nowwwww. Want to has heat pls.

    That's bullshit!
