Another mugging on St. Johns and Underhill
About an hour ago, a group of four teen males mugged a girl in front of 340 St. Johns (the building that recently hired night security guards), then tripped her, and kicked her. It's the same group of kids who have been hanging out regularly at that end of the block, as well as on Lincoln. It was all well planned. One kid ran up behind her and when she turned around, the other three knocked her to the ground. What these Einsteins didn't notice is that they had four spectators less than ten feet from them. Turns out one of them lives in 340 on the fourth floor. We spoke to the cops, who know who these kids are. One of them has been wearing a camouflage hoodie. Their m.o. is to target single females. Just a head's up.

super, right by my apartment.
i really hate the fact that i want to think these kids are fine and there's nothing wrong with them being there. and then they start beating random girls. -
So, what was the outcome? Did they arrest anyone? Was she seriously hurt? Hospital trip? Let her know there's people thinking about her and wishing her well.
I'm getting tired of this place... -
Subject: Cowards
I hope they catch these people and give them what they deserve. And before anyone comes here to blame it on the victim or try to give some TLC to these criminals, I state it: these people are despicable cowards, no matter what is their background or situation. -
4 boys robbing a lone woman? Brave little pricks.

Well, we stayed with her until the police came. They responded quickly and we were generally sastisfied with their efforts. The police offered to drive her around but she felt that she couldn't identify them. All we could make out were their jackets.
Unfortunately I doubt there were any arrests.
An ambulance came and but she refused treatment because of lack of insurance. This despite the fact that her front teeth were knocked out. We felt badly for her, and tried to convince her to go, but she was adamant.
We also spoke to the security guard who was on duty in 340 St. Johns. As many of you have probably noticed, up until recently the guards have been stationed out in front of the building. According to the guard on duty last night, the policy has changed, and he was told by his superiors to stay in the lobby. He agreed that this was unfortunate and if he was stationed outside this event may have been prevented. Though there wasn't much he could do at that point, he was concerned and provided napkins for the girl's bleeding mouth. -

Did the police or the ambulance crew NOT inform her that she would be covered under the Crime Victims Board?!?!?!

She needs to go to the hospital to get the ball rolling so she can get teeth back in her head and file a claim to cover it. THE CITY AND ITS RESIDENTS PAY FOR THIS!!! -
No, the police did not inform her about the CVB, though they did say that she shouldn't worry about not having insurance and should be treated. They also offered to drive her there themselves if she wanted.
Unfortunately she left before the medical personnel could speak to her. She said she had a friend nearby with a car and would go to the hospital with her. -
"about an hour ago" - when was that?

You are correct about the CVB but I think that money comes from the illegal money the courts/police seize and not our tax dollars which makes it even more of a great program -

It happened last night, Sept 30th, at approx 9pm -
F***ing lovely. These a**hole kids need to be removed from the streets. This is what it has come to. They know the cops aren't going to do anything about it, so they'll keep on keeping on. And really, is there a need to mug and jump the person? If the 4 a**holes had just surrounded her and said give us your stuff, she probably would have and not put up a fight.
What are our options for personal protection in NYC? Can we carry stun guns or are we limited to pepper-spray and the other noneffective self defense items you can buy in any dollar store?
They better hope they don't try this shit with my gf - she'll be the shit out of them, and then go looking for revenge. -
Really, Niner? Does she have a katana?

No, but thats a good idea.
And we all know thats how its going to go down - the heathens will either meet their match, or at least someone who fights back, and one of them will be seriously injured. Then, the community on St. Johns will be outraged that one of their "good kids" was hurt by someone even though they were mugging the person.
The more I think about this today, the more pissed I get. -
Does anyone think that walking a cute fluffy dog would be a good deterrent for mugging, though? I don't have any guns or swords. I wish..

if all of this is true, why were there no arrests? -

Well, we don't know for a fact that there were no arrests afterwards. That's an assumption, based on the fact that the victim didn't want to file a report and couldn't give the police any real descriptive information.
After the victim and police left, we went and spoke with the security guard who told us that he saw the group near the building before the incident occured and knew that one member of the group lived in the building. -
Nope, stun guns are not allowed in nyc and neither are mace or batons.

its a LOSE LOSE situation ..
# 1 those degenerates will never move outta the hood..
# 2 they will terrorize you in many a new way
# 3 the police wont do shit with out a complaining witness
# 4 thats just the cycle of life in the ghetto that has become "GENTRIFIED" -
Pepper spray (depending on percentage of active ingredient ) is legal to carry, but not in schools, civil buildings, etc.
I suspect a good spay in the face might slow them down. -
I disagree that these types will never leave the neighborhood. As the area continues to gentrify, their zone of comfort (i.e. section 8) will dry up and prove less lucractive to landlords, thus displacing them. Many of them will wind up in prison and by the time they are released they will not be able to afford the increased rents in the area (e.g. unemployed, no HS diplima, no GED, no marketable skills, no work history, lack of soft skills, poor temper control, felony convictions, untreated substance abuse problems, etc.) . Hence, they will be forced to live in Brownsville, East NY, South Jamaica, etc. and CH and PH will be that much safer. Better days are on the way, folks!

Wow, yea that's really the answer?
Try forming a Neighborhood watch and going to community meetings with the police or organizing them along with the police, take a urban self defense class or learn ways to observe your surroundings so you are never in a situation where you can get hurt for example talking on your cell phone listening to an Ipod. Things like this are a little more productive then sitting around waiting for the neighborhood to get better and the thugs to move out and or stop mugging you. -

Why on earth would she not want to file a report when her freaking teeth got kicked/punched out?!?!?! Now it'll be one just more undocumented case, our stats will look "fine" and we won't get an increase in protection....nice.

Ok- so I'm not holding the vic totally responsible for this- but it's just not good for the community to NOT file a report when a crime has been committed. -

i don't want to blame the victim either -- and as to the kids, i'd say baseball bats are legal anywhere -- but that stopped me too. didn't want to file a report? refused treatment? something's up. -

I love it when supposed liberal Brooklyn suddenly becomes the far right.

Maybe she is an illegal immigrant?
-
...or thinks the police will do nothing.
...or thinks the friends of perps will do worse things to her if she involves the police. -
OK ...
so 2 reasons she wouldnt wanna file a report..
# 1 she knows that these kids are minors and the juve justice system is a complete joke.. so they would be out in under 2 days then futher terrorize her..where as now they might not even look twice at her if they see her again
# 2 they already terrorized her again and she just doesnt have the money to move and its just a harsh daily battle for her that she wants to put in the past.
i wish i knew her..id tell her file the fuckin report ... but i dont

Very sad to hear of this
