  • My heat isn't on yet but I don't mind. I prefer it a bit on the cold side.
  • I control my own heat so it's on whenever I want it, but I pay for my own heat and live on the top floor so it's generally off.

Yep. I live above a restaurant so I hardly need mine. It was a lovely 73 all night and day. Yay!
  • it is SO HOT in my apartment! i went to bed last night in a long-sleeved shirt and undies and slept under one sheet, and i woke up all sweaty and parched. it's too ridiculous. kitteh is happy, though; when i left for work she was curled up on the kitchen floor with her nose under the radiator.
  • I haven't turned on the heat yet. Getting close though with temps in the 40's. We pay for our own heat (co-op) and hold out for as long as possible.
  • This is my first experience ever without having my own heat, and yesterday was the first time it pissed me off. I'm FREEZING. So far the heat hasn't gone on.

No heat at all?? It was in the 30s last night, so heat should have been on everywhere!

that's not ok. your landlord is breaking the law
  • Good to know. I'll call now; I woke up sniffly.
  • Call 311. Something might happen. Eventually.
  • I had to finally call my landlord last night to get some heat. The crazy part is he is not some absentee landlord, but lives downstairs in a 2-family house.

how did he respond? I feel like Oliver Twist when I have to ask for heat!
  • i had mines set for this season begging at 70 :p. when it gets colder i'll adjust it higher.

i had a call last night from the same tenant who calls me every year. so i adjust hers up to 75 and probably 95 during the middle of winter. cause she likes it hot. other wise all my other tenants think its fine. i call them to make sure it was.

if she is calling me again tomorrow. i'll just have to hit 85 and if she calls me again. i'll go over to her apt and bringing a thermo stat with me. and the nyc heat regulations. her apt heating cost me more than my 6 family building vs her 3 family building.

You should call your landlord first rather than escalate it into a situation right away.

if that girl did that to me. i'll so want her out.
  • I just called my landlord (who also lives in the building but spends most of his time in Jersey,) He called me to explain that it's early in the season blah blah blah, I said I know but I'm freezing blah blah blah. End result: tenant on the top floor with a key went down and turned up the heat. Talk to your landlord first. I'm toasty now.
  • I agree that talking to the landlord should be your first route, but "early in the season" = crap. The law says Oct. 1st + under a certain temp, and it is WAY under that temp now.

Totally agree. As do my kitty-cicles. :D
  • brrrrrr!!!!! am on couch under amazing alpaca blanket and still cold. Just turned the heat on.

In light of having the first brisk weather of the season, I thought I would dust this thread off.

  • It is insanely hot in my apartment even with all of the windows open. I find trying to sleep in an 80 degree room oppressive and I'm sure that all of the excess heat is factored into my increasingly rising maintenance costs. Some of my neighbors who complain most about the cold don't like to wear clothes. One winter I saw the guy downstairs in a wife beater shirt and cutoffs that were so short that the pockets were sticking out. This isn't Florida North!

  • I spent one incredibly long year in a studio in college that averaged 82 during the winter. I slept in as little clothing as possible with the AC on (until it died) or the windows open and the door ajar hoping in vain for a cross breeze. It was very depressing wishing for a brisk winter wind and being excited about single digits outside because I was slowly baking to death. My few friends that braved the heat to visit called it "The Penthouse of Hell" as I was on the 8th Floor.

Trust me you don't want to live through an entire winter of that. Call your landlord and explain the problem to him and demand a fix. While too much heat is a first world problem, its also a miserable existence that includes an increased susceptibility to colds and virus as your body is constantly trying to reset itself to the changing environments as you go in and out.

Do you have baseboard heaters or radiators? If radiators I think there is a way to close the valve so that heat does not emanate from them

  • In large old buildings, the radiators sometimes have no valves. Or, the valves can not be turned due do rust/crude.

Throwing a non flammable blanket over the radiator is one way to keep the heat from radiator from escaping into the room.

  • Thanks, everyone. Homeowner, I have felt that I am living in the first circle of hell. The valves of all of the radiators in my apartment are closed. A lot of the problem has to do with three risers that I've done my best to insulate. Guess I'm just a hot tamale! :sunny:
