Looking for recommendations>Apple picking near NYC by tra
I've been searching online for orchards that aren't 2+ hours away, and the information overload is getting to me. Has anyone gone apple picking recently? Where did you go?
There will be about 6-8 of us, all willing to take a train/cab (no one with a zipcar account, unfortunately) this Sunday. The orchards in Warwick, NY, are too much of a trek (2 hour bus ride?), so I'm thinking our best bet is upper Westchester--maybe one of these places:
Wilkens Farm, Yorktown Heights, NY (Metro North to Croton-Harmon)
http://www.wilkensfarm.com/index.php
Outhouse Orchards, North Salem NY (Metro North to Croton Falls)
http://www.outhouseorchards.info/index.html
Riamede Farm, Chester NJ
http://www.riamede.com/apples.shtml
This would be a train, then a bus, then walking a couple miles...ugh.
It would suck to trek all the way out there only to find out that the trees are over-picked or the place is run poorly.
Any suggestions?

we went to fishkill farms last weekend. its about 1.5 hrs from brooklyn, nice drive up the taconic makes it seem faster. seasons ending so hurry.

There are options in Long Island which may be decent - not sure of the towns though. I know there is one by Hicksville and another by Northport. Both served by LIRR. Train ride should be around 1 hour to 1.25.

I live by Riamede Farms in Chester. The orchards are very cool and you can go into town to check out the antique stores and other craft type stores with interesting items like jewelry or other crafty stuff. If you come in between 10 and 2, there is a farmer's market in the center of town with fresh locally grown produce that my daugther, who lives in Brooklyn, says is incredibly cheap. I got two bags of produce for $14 and my daughter says they'd cost $40 in the city.
If you had a way to get to Alstede's Farm on Route 24 just west of the center of town about 1 mile, they have home made preserves, apple and pumpkin butter, home made pies, animals to pet, corn mazes and other kid activites. It can be a zoo on the weekend.
But how do you get from the Gladstone train to Chester or the farm itself? If they offer shuttles of some sort, I'd say go for it. A taxi is about $30.The train ride out is beautiful with views of farmland and horse farms. It takes about 1 hour 30 minutes from NY Penn Station with a change in Newark and is the Gladstone Line.
If you decide to eat in town anywhere, I'd say go to Redwoods, which is on the way back into town from the farm and has outdoor seating or great seating in the bar area. There's also a more formal dining room. I don't like the Publick House food at all, but if it's a nice day then having a drink on the outdoor deck is nice. Also, there's a cafe two doors from the Publick House next to an antique and furniture store that has excellent sandwiches. It's called something like "Once Upon a Cafe" or something along those lines.
Anyhow, if you need more info on this area, let me know. It's definitely in the country and beautiful.
Where ever you decide to go, enjoy your day! -
Oh, and if you need a taxi you can call Chester Taxi, or the owner has a pizzeria called Gianangelo's at 908-879-0669, but he's closed in Sundays so you need to make these arrangements in advance.
There's also a huge corn maze at Stony Hill Farm on North Road who also has produce and home made items near Riamede on the way back into town. If you got dropped off there you could walk to Redwoods in 5 minutes. The walk into town from there would be about 10 minutes. -
my friend did this for her b-day one year and rented a passenger van that fit 13 - the car element makes the upstate trip so awesome & you can go to more places & see more things!

Thanks all--I think renting a car/van is the way to go, so long as someone else drives... Since most of the orchards are clustered together, if we don't like one we have the option of trying another. The corn maze sounds fun too!
People are getting apple pies for Xmas... ;-) -

So which one are you going to? If it's Chester bring a jacket. We're about 10 degrees cooler than Brooklyn. The leaves just started falling with beautiful colors all around. If you need more info and directions from Brooklyn, send me a note and I can give you the fastest and easiest way to get here.
Where ever you go, have a great time.
