Brooklyn Gift? — Brooklynian

Brooklyn Gift?

Since my (now) husband moved to Brooklyn, we're been buying my inlaws a "gift-basket" of Brooklyn foods/drinks for Christmas (they live in Arizona). For example, last year we got truffles from Sweet Melissa's, chocolates from The Chocolate Room, and Brooklyn Local 1 beer all put into a (now gone) Brooklyn Beverage Barn reusable shopping bag.

If you were putting together an edible bag of Brooklyn "stuff" (consumables), what would you buy?

Thanks for any ideas!! I'm willing to travel, but want it to all be Brooklyn stuff.

Thanks!!!

  • jamican beef patty, Hair weave and gift certificate for the Navy yard car pound. You can put it in a rescued plastic bag from a tree branch.
  • these non-consumable gifts are free:

    1. pondering green pet care

    2. re-gifting unbleached canvas shopping bags

    3. acquiring vegan self-righteousness

    4. laughing at someone who just ate a $6 hot dog

    5. questioning eco-friendly dry cleaning
  • Bierkraft has many local microbrews that you can add to the basket. How are these being sent? If it's overnight, you might get away with some 'lard bread' from Mazzolas.. a Brooklyn institution!
  • what a nice idea! you could try spinach pies from damascus bakery on atlantic avenue, hummus from sahadis a few doors down, coffee from d'amicos on court street, anything from grab in south slope, jacques torres chocolates from dumbo. i will keep thinking.
  • If you overnight ship it, I'd include some bagels from Bagel Hole.
  • Gorilla Coffee.

    Mouse from Junior's.
  • Brooklyn t-shirts, available at Triangle Sports (they used to be, anyway).
  • any sorts of cheeses from Stinky Brooklyn (including mclures pickles).
  • Thanks! -- We are going to check it in our bags on the plane so hopefully some of these fresher ideas will work!
  • OK here's my list

I would definitely go with Mama's idea of Mazzolla's lard bread, and snarkslope's Sahadi and Jacque Torre's idea.
If you wanted to add Steve's Key Lime Pie, add the fixings for a real NY egg cream (everyone can say what they want but it must have Fox's U-Bet), stuff it in a Brooklyn Botanic Garden - "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" bag and maybe even add one of their cookbooks to the gift.

Just an FYI: you can't mail alcohol. I found this out the hard way after buying a few bottles of wine upstate.

I'm loving the Bagel Hole idea.

really? i've never had a problem mailing alcohol -- just don't tell them. But, that said, we're taking it as our checked bag on the plane.
  • I've mailed wine before via UPS, don't ask don't tell. It's not a customs check. I've also taken 2 pounds of tamales in my check-in suit case from LA to NY. I froze them and they made it here still frozen and ready to heat up... but I digress... now I'm hungry too...
  • Subject: Brooklyn Gifts

My out-of-town relatives always ask for a fresh glass of sludge from the Gowanus Canal when I visit them.
  • My mother keeps asking for those triangular prune cookies from the Jewish bakeries.
  • I second the Gorilla Coffee idea...you could also get some Nunu chocolates, a T-shirt from Brooklyn Industries or, better yet, Artez'n....actually, Artez'n would be a great place to shop.

Sahadi's, the cheese places, a new half-sized growler from Bierkraft with some Sixpoint, some kale chips from NY Naturals.....all good ideas....

I think in past years stinky has put together a brooklyn based gift basket with a bunch of local (non-perishable) stuff. I know they carry a lot of local items beyond cheese.
  • Lots of good ideas and shops already mentioned!

My mom loves marzipan but it's not very common where she is so I usually pick some up at a local shop. I've even gotten the prepackaged ones (you know, the little fruit shapes) made in NJ or NY, at D'vine and Mom and SIL both thought they were good.

I would buy some frozen DUB Pies (Pie Shop one a block south of the park on PPW), and maybe store them in your freezer with some dry ice for a day or two before flying. The luggage hold of the plane is usually really cold so they would probably do fine, even without "super freezing". Once they are at fridge temps you can heat them in the oven for about 13 minutes at 350 F and they are very yummy. You can buy them hot, cold, or frozen at the shop. Curry vegetable and the chicken vegetable are my favorites.

hamentashen? ick. chocolate babka, however, is another story.

(is now the time to pimp out my brooklyn products?)
  • man, so many ideas! we'll be set for the next 10 christmases!! thank you!
  • Park Delicatessen has tons of Brooklyn gifts.

i live down the block so i'll stop by this weekend.
  • Not food related, and specific to brooklyn, but very NYC. I just bought a bunch of Pashima's in different colors to give to my grandma, mom and best friends back home. They are so soft and colorful I want to keep them! I may have to go back and get more. Nothing like a lovely deep red, grass green or blue pashima to use as a scarf in the winter.
  • i did that for my grandma last year since where she lives she'll go to macy's and spend like $50 while i can get like 10 for that price on the street.
  • Black and white cookies.

But if the wine breaks, or something, during shipping you would be caught and you would be a'screwed.
  • in regards to Vegan Cheese/Spicy Miso Kale Chips from New York Naturals, stop by the store for a free sample. We have free shipping options available. Good Luck and happy shopping!

I would also recommend getting something from the PS. 321 Crafts Fair where you can support local artists, ome steak sauce from Peter Luger (which you can get many places) and if you are looking for Authentic Brooklyn Flare, head to The Brooklyn Museum. Support them and get some neat gift wrap. They are having great sales!

New York Naturals is located at 253 Flatbush Avenue on the corner of 6th Ave.

Hooray for residents of Park Place! Loving Prospect Heights.
  • Not sure why the Mod referred back to this thread and locked the other. This thread was looking specifically Brooklyn Food and Drink ideas, where the other poster was looking for Brooklyn themed gifts that would go beyond food.

Anyhoo, Artezn (Artezn.com) on Atlantic ave has a bunch of Brooklyn themed and made gifts from locals artists. Worth checking out if you are not looking just for food
  • On the web site Brokelyn, they're doing a whole series of great Brooklyn gifts that are under $25.

  • Food item idea: Steve's Key Lime Pies in Red Hook. Non-food idea: The Brooklyn Museum gift shop has a section dedicated to Brooklyn - great cloth napkins/dish towels, glassware, etc.
