Local food donation — Brooklynian

Local food donation

For the holidays, I am cleaning out my kitchen cabinets and donating all my non-perishables. Does anyone know of a place in the neighborhood that accepts food donations or has an upcoming food drive? I'm near the Duryea Church - anyone know if they have anything like this?

  • All FDNY fire houses are collecting for City Harvest currently..

    (edited for subject/verb agreement issues..)
  • Yes, through January 8th City Harvest is collecting canned goods at all firehouses, police precincts and Modell's Sporting Goods Stores.
  • Call the church closest to you home. Some have interfaith shelter programs with the city. Also, CHIPs in Park Slope. Call St. Luke and St. Matthew church on Clinton. Also, the little white church on Vandy and St. Marks has a soup kitchen and is sort of drop-in center for our neighborhood elderly and semi homeless folks. It has helped a lot of guys in the hood turnaround.
  • A side note: please don't donate past-date items.
My sister works at a place that gets donations, and the amount of past-date food they receive is stunning. Are people trying to poison those in need? Who knows...

There was a story about how donating $$ does more good, yesterday's NYTimes
