Favorite Italian Rest. for Dinner

We're thinking Frankies 457 but I'm scared of all the rude service/waiter reviews.
We're in the mood for Italian. Any ideas? Is Frankies really that bad?

  • i had a nice time at frankie's the one time i've gone. my favorite place is in chicago, alas.
  • Do you want Northern Italian or old-school, red sauce joint Italian?

How far will you travel and what price range?
  • I happen to love Red Rose on Smith Street. Family owned, great service and they have a great wine selection.

Never been to Frankies but a few friend have and they all had a great meal and great service.
  • Red Rose is great, Frankies is good too, but its more like fancy pants italian ( like 3 meatballs for 10 dollars -with pine nuts and raisins?)..Depends what kind of Italian you want, I hear Po is good to, but higher end as well. Red Rose is our sunday dinner most of the time, really good.
  • I swear by Savoia on Smith Street -- really lovely, warm atmosphere, great service and delicious food at reasonable prices.
  • I really like Frankie's - the cavatelli with hot sausage is amazing. The personal pies at Savoia are also very good. I also like Fragole on Court Street - great pastas and lasagna.

Our friends like old school. Prefer Brooklyn. Any price range.
  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Will check them out.
  • I've always had great service at Frankie's - sorry about your experiences there. I would recommend going back (if you dare) or it you want something different, going to Marco Polo on Court and Union. It's very old school to the point of having a random Italian mural on the wall and live piano music (I recommend getting in the mood for that kind of place and you will have a great time). Having said that, I highly recommend the fresh pasta (ask what the fresh pasta is that day and order it). The chef is from Italy. Mike, the manager, Tony, the bartender, and all of the waitstaff will make sure you have a very pleasant and relaxing time. I don't think you will leave disappointed.
  • About 2 blocks away is Fragole. It's one of my favorite little italian restaurants in NYC. good prices too.

  • We ended up at Frankies and had a great time. Long line but we somehow lucked out and only had a 5 minute wait. Funny, there was only one special and it was an appetizer special. It was very good along with the others we shared...different crostini.
The cavatelli and pork braciola were excellent. No rude waiters/waitresses but one guy, manager I think, kept walking back and forth while we were finishing our second bottle of wine and nobody was in the mood for dessert.

Will definitely go back. I do want to try the other suggestions mentioned here.

    Thanks again.
  • O man, I love Frankie's. Never experienced rudeness there, or at their place down the street with prime cocktails, Prime Meats. Where were the bad notices? Yelp has been busted a bunch lately for shills and their mirror, anti-shill competitor posting...

Those peculiar meatballs with currants are Sicilian. I too love the cavatelli with hot sausage . . . a platonic ideal of Italian comfort food.
  • Would love to find a good Italian restaurant closer than Bay Ridge or Bensonhurst, any suggestions other than Frankie's? I can't believe I have lived here for so long and have never been to Marco Polo's, going to have to try them one day.

We love Maria's out in Sheepshead Bay by the way, great old school good food Italian!
  • Tomasso, on 86th between 14th Ave and 16th Ave. Supposedly this place called Ortobello,on Bay Parkway by 64th Street is really good as well.
  • Red Rose and Tomasso are my favorites
  • I finally spotted Red Rose last night while walking down Smith Street to Clover Club. I've been meaning to check them out
