Born Thai on Flatbush. — Brooklynian

Born Thai on Flatbush.

Looks fun... saw the restaurant menu for lunch.
Anyone try it yet?

  • where is it?

meanwhile tatsu sushi on flatbush (next to carneviento) is now advertising a thai menu under the name asian time. anyone have any idea what's going on there?

perhaps one of these will finally offer some decent thai food!
  • I've given up on all Thai other than Joya/Song, because Joya/Song is SOO much better than the rest! You can never go wrong with 8 dollar entrees with HUGE portions that are AMAZING!
  • where is joya/song?
  • Song is on 5th Avenue and like 1st Street and Joya is in Downtown Brooklyn on Court Street near Wycoff. You can google them. They are owned by the same person and they are SO GOOD!
  • worth trying but assume they don't deliver to p heights. so still curious about born thai and shatsu if anyone knows anything about either.
  • Actually, I live on Prospect Place and Song delivers here.
  • I don't think Song is anything special, though it is certainly a good value. I'm hoping this new place will be a step up--I don't think any Thai options around here are particularly exciting.
  • May I ask what you had there when you went? Because there are a few mediocre dishes but most of them are INCREDIBLE! Try the Tofu Pad See Yu, the Mango Salad, the Pad Thai, the Tofu Tod, and the Summer Rolls. All AMAZING.
  • Hmm, it's been a while since I've been. Of those dishes, the only two I might have had would be the pad thai and the summer rolls, but I don't quite remember. Anyway, I would definitely return to Song--I just don't remember it rising above the level of "decent neighborhood Thai." But then, very few places do. Rhong-Tiam in the city and Sripraphai in Queens rank far above anything else I've had in NYC.
  • song is good, it's certainly not incredible.

mango thai on 7th avenue is probably the best thai in the area.

    song has gone downhill.
  • I went to Born Thai for lunch today. The place has a pleasant atmosphere, friendly staff, and eye-catching menu (in terms of its design). Anyway, onto the food. I had a mere lunch special, but just going by that limted sample, I give Born the thumbs up. The starter salad was your standard small affair, but with fresh-tasting ingredients; the chicken dumplings were right in texture but lacked much flavor, so that was a miss. But the drunken noodles, the entree, were properly spicy and far above average for this sort of place. Thai iced tea was also good, though I don't know if I've ever had a bad Thai iced tea. My friend had a simple plate of steamed vegetables, which she liked. I'm looking forward to trying more from Born.
  • where is born thai?
  • On Flatbush between Prospect and St. Marks, next to Franny's.

Both times I've ordered from them they've commented that this part of PH is outside their delivery area, but that they would "check with the delivery guy to see whether he wants to go there." And so they ended up delivering, but making clear that they didn't really want to, and that it was a bit of a hassle. I think it's Underhill that's their boundary -- maybe Vanderbilt. I'm between Underhill and Washington.

I really love Song; this is just info re: previous comment.

Update: Song says they won't deliver to Sterling and Underhill.
  • I gotcha. Im between Carlton and Vanderbilt and I've never had that complaint from them.
  • Is Born only open for lunch? I recently had lunch with a friend at Mee Thai on 5th ave in park slope. The drunken noodles there were very good and fairly spicy.

I've been to song a number of times, the food is good for the value but nothing too amazing. I like it because you can have a fresh meal for under $10.

My favorite thai is still in queens... Sripraphai.
  • OK, there's a bunch of thoughts about places in Park Slope, etc. Has anyone actually been to Born yet? Any thoughts?
  • I got take out yesterday. Got the appetizer sampler: spring roll, duck roll, curry puff, shrimp roll. Nothing to write home about. Mango curry puff is way better.

Drunken noodle was quite good though, liked that.
  • Their lunch special is 2-3 dollars more than Mango -- that's going to be tough to pull off.

They do have more meat options for their entrees though.
  • Anyone else now have this stuck in their head?

  • just tried mee thai last week, and it's now my favorite thai anywhere i've tried in nyc outside of sripraphai.

    seriously good. and cheap.

it was so delicious i'm going to write a separate entry about it on the park slope board.

mango is still really good too.
  • I second Mee Thai. Better than Song or Mango by far. They deliver very quickly and are great on the phone (they remember your address, tell you the total, very professional). However, I live very close to this new place, Born. And, they have a nicely designed menu so I will definitely try them out. More Thai Places = Better Thai Places.
  • Subject: needs work

I would like to like Born and see it succeed because they seem like nice folks and are a neighbor but it seems like they need a lot of work on their food to make it worthwhile -
I would venture that they do a minimum of real cooking (sauteeing ingredients, etc in that kitchen. Feels to me like a LITE rendition of Thai resting heavily on purchased curry pastes and an assessment that the nabe thinks of thai as heathy and light, Therefore they can get away with small serving sizes and scanty amounts of both meat and veg, no initial sauteeing of meat in curries, sauces that are basically a thin dilution of curry paste in broth or coc milk. Our duck jungle curry was too liquid (this dish should be relatively dry) and didnt have the depth that proper cooking would provide. Daughter noted there was very little to the dish. Worst of all we paid for duck and got - except for one little piece - white meat chicken. papaya salad was ok not great, soft shell crab was overly greasy and tasted of old grease, not a good rendition. Maybe they do a better job on the noodles and other dishes but Im not impressed
  • I have only had two noodle dishes, but I disagree that the food is subpar. I was back there today, and had the shrimp pad thai lunch special (boring, I know). I did think the shrimp were a little on the tough side, but the noodles, peanuts, spices, etc. were all pretty killer. Certainly better than your average Thai place.
  • the Mrs and I went to Born last night.

It was yummy, and had good atmosphere.

Although somewhat complex to figure out, their menu consists of basic thai offerings, they just take it a step higher with their food presentation.

Overall, it was a nice place. About $14 an entree

The quick read: In comparison to Udom Thai on Washington, this place has better food, nice atmosphere, and is about $3 more for an entree)

P.S. They don't have their beer and wine lic yet.
  • Ordered take out form there tonight. I ordered the basil eggplant tofu dish, and asked for it spicy. However, they delivered it burning hot, and I barely was able to eat it. Aside from the spicyness, it was alright. Nothing special. Nowhere near as good as Joya or Song. It's around 5 dollars more per entree at Born than Joya/Song, and not nearly as good.
  • Best Thai in the local area, as far as I'm concerned. But as someone who lives within earshot of its backyard, the on-and-off whirring motor sound coming from something back there is really annoying.
