Electric Bill — Brooklynian

Electric Bill

I have been noticing that my electricity bills seem to be way too high when I ask people what they pay. So I did a little research and I noticed that my apartment is classified as a EL2 Non-residential as opposed to a residential. Does anyone know if this would make my electric bills excessively high?

Thank You.

If they have not been able to get in to read the meters for quite some time you will be getting estimated bills. If the last time they read the meter was around the warmer months when you were running a/c's and fans then the bill will be higher than usual for the winter months. If you can access the meters, call CE and set up a time for them to read the meters.

EL2 is a non-residential rate. We assign it to businesses that normally use less than 3,000 kWhrs and register less than 10 kilowatts (kW) of
demand monthly. Demand is the amount of energy drawn when a machine is first turned on. EL2 is generally for small stores, offices,
newsstands, and public areas and hallways in small buildings.

The possibility exists that if you go over the 3,000 kWhrs you pay an even higher rate. "Penalized" for being a waster. Not sure if and/or how much.
  • ^ That also doesn't include usage charges, right? It looks like its just delivery charges and the flat rate for having an account.

You have a service charge, delivery charge, SBC charge, temporary NY State Surcharge and a GRT & other tax surcharges plus the actual electric used.
I think the "flat rate" is the "basic service charge"? I don't know what a usage charge would be, the delivery charge? ConEd makes their money on the "services" they provide (charging more for commercial accounts obviously) more than the actual electricity they sell you. Sort of like a gas station selling gas with 100% tax added.
The electricity used on a EL1 is only about 1/2 of the bill.
  • our bill is way higher this year, too. sucks.
