alternative to cablevision- optimum? — Brooklynian

alternative to cablevision- optimum?

is there an alternative to cablevision/optimum for an internet service provider in the neighborhood? i know they have stretched themselves thin in the area, but where else can we go?

  • Optimum Online
Verizon - for now DSL but they are starting to make it harder to get because they are putting out Fios
If you search more you will see other companies selling high speed but they are ptetty much just reselling Verizion Dsl under their own name

last and really not any better is satellite internet
you have a company like Hughes offering that
but it is just as pricey as Optimum if not more and slower speeds
its really just for rural spots where they don't even have a local cable or phone providers offering high speed because the companies don't see enough profit in it
hence why getting internet access in a lot of peoples opinions should be a fundamental right..but that is another discussion for another time :)
  • I have the misfortune of having Optimum as my ONLY option. I can't get anything from Verizon other than phone service or sattelite service.
  • the optimum man was here to "fix" my phone on Monday. Still does not work properly. And he left some of his equipment here. I was pretty sure if nothing more he'd be back to retrieve that! Regret leaving Verizon and their service was pretty pitable too! Can you spell media hostage?

It is worth noting that the Verizon website is often wrong when it tells you that DSL is not available at your address. At both my current and previous apartments, the Verizon site said I could only get phone and DirecTV. I decided I wanted the Verizon version of the triple play (DirecTV, home phone, DSL) and called to ask them if there was any way I could get the DSL. It took them a day of research but Verizon called me back and said I could indeed get DSL despite what the website said. At my present address I just called to establish service and got it right away, despite the website saying it wasn't available.

So - call and ask, you might be surprised...
  • I have been using AceDSL (Now AceInnovative) for over 10 years without a problem. They use the Verizon backbone, but thats it.
They offer phone service as well.

Thanks for letting me know! I will definitely call and ask. I'm over optimum and their crazy rates and inconsistent upload/download times.

I have heard good things about Ace as far as customer support and they do offer "naked DSL" which is nice.. ie not having to have a dial tone..
but unfortunately their speeds are lacking (especially upload) and the price to get more speed is even more than Optimum is ..
  • I work from home. Used Earthlink DSL (1.5Mbps) which was installed by Covad in 2000 and down a grand total of 4 days in 9+ years. For the past 5 years I've used Optimum Online as a backup. Last Dec. I switched to OO and had the same experiences with inconsistent performance. After 3 months of trying to find a solution and being told all kinds of nonsense, I came across a post on these boards, which solved the issue for me.

  • A tech was at my house yesterday from Optimum. He told me that they had been upgrading the system in the nabe since October. They were supposed to be finished by feb. 1 but haven't yet. Said that service should improve soon.

    I hope it does...
