need advice on long commute
I'm considering a job in Princeton, NJ. Best case scenario is 1.5 hours commute each way. Worse case is 2.5 hours each way. I could drive and/or take the 2/3 to Penn Station and hop on NJ Transit. In time I might be able to move near Penn Station to eliminate most of the subway ride, but would still be looking at 1.5 hours, at best.
Anyone out there commute from our area to Princeton or nearby? Alternatively, anyone have experience with long commutes - do they ruin your day? The hours at the job should be rather predictable - 9 to 5 or 6.
Thanks for your input.

I've had a long commute before. Unless this is your dream job, don't do it. You'll be spending 3-5 hours a day commuting. Add that to 9 hours a day at work and you won't have time for much else (and you probably won't feel like doing much else even if you do have time). The only plus is that you'll have lots of reading time.

YIKES! Are you talking mass transit all the way? Thats going to be a freakin' fortune and you better count on 2.5 hours (possibly more - ALWAYS count on delays)!
I tried to do it for a while in commuting to Cherry Hill - not too far from there - and decided that mass transit was very expensive (and tiring) and driving was not much better ($$$ and time wise). I was a dishrag by the time I got home.
If this is a job that you absolutely need/always wanted, an alternative is to look into renting in Philly. There are neighborhoods in Philly that are somewhat similar to Brooklyn - and cheaper. Might be an option.
GOOD LUCK!!!!! -
CL/ church group. Get a room for rent with a bed and a TV, the 4 or 500 bucks you will spend will be way less than tolls delays/train tickets/peace of mind. There is some old lady out there that needs some cash start looking for her before killing yourself.

You will end up hating your job because of the travel time. That wouldn't be fair to you or your employer. Trust me. You should try and sublet your place for 3 months and you rent a room near your new job and see if you like it after the 3 months are up. Then make your decision.

Agree with the others... a commute like that would drain away your life force. If you want the job and you're in a position to move, either temporarily or permanently, Princeton is a really nice place to live IMO.

Don't do it. I had to commute to suburban NJ to visit a client and show some love. The drive was too long, and mass transit was just way too long to be an option. Luckily, the firm I worked for had a pretty liberal expense policy, so I drove down once a week (always leaving the house after 9am to avoid rush hour), went to the client, spent the night in Princeton ...the next day I'd go back to the client (about 20 minutes from Princeton) and leave mid-day (never later than 2 to avoid rush hour again).
It sucked ass. And I only did one round trip per week. Without rush hour.
Just don't. -
The reverse commute to Princeton from Brooklyn isn't bad by car. It's only about 45 miles. You'll make it there in about an hour without much of a problem.
Mass transit will be terrible. -
i have a commute like that, and it's only tolerable because i don't have a regular 9-5, m-f situation (i teach college).
even the semester i had to go 4 days a week (instead of 2) nearly killed me. and that wasn't 8-hour days.

I had a commute like that once 2 hours long on the train. slept on it all the way boring as hell. it drains your life like other people said but damn!! yours is like super long!
-
If you figure out a way to teleport to Princeton, let me know. I've recently been shanghaied into making client visits there. Not looking forward to the commute.

I used to commute from Prospect Heights to Stamford Conn. In the winter you would wake up in the dark and by the time you left work it was dark. I found it really depressing. I eventually ended up quitting. 3-4 hours a day on trains. But I did manage to read a good couple hundred books!

thanks all. this commute doesn't seem very viable.

This is an interesting topic. What is the average commute people have, and what is 'manageable.' Let's try and exclude those people who work down the road from their house, or from their home office etc. I'm thinking of taking a job with a 1 hour commute each way. Is that average? My current 35 min commute is more my style

I currently have a 12 minute commute. I can barely skim AM New York before it's time to get off the train!

I can relate. I used to work at home (couldn't stand it - I'm a social animal)...but I saved lots of money on not buying clothes

4 stops on the 2 train for me.
-
4 stops on the Q, for me.
-
Packed 2/3 to Atlantic, then empty LIRR to Jamaica = 40 min.
-
1 stop on the S, 1 stop on the 4, 10 minutes on the B17 gets me to work -- so anywhere between 22 minutes and 40 minutes depending on how things are timed out. I have the AM commute down to a science and get to work in 30 minutes exactly but the PM commute is more hit-or-miss as to whether trains or buses will be on time.
I don't think I could do more than an hour - after that, I'd be too upset that I could have been getting a lot more sleep -
used to do a 1.5 hour drive out to livingston NJ. The thing is, the 1.5 was on a smooth day. Most times, a single accident would add a good 30-60 mins to the trip. anyone ever been over the sickle draw bridge in newark? always an accident there. always.
also, although it was the "reverse commute" forget getting home at a decent time on fridays, because the whole of NJ is trying to get into nyc on fridays evenings,,so all the bridges and tunnels are delayed.
I survived it for 5 years, but was totally shredded by the end. I now have a 35 min drive through brooklyn. there is no comparison! I can even get a few errands done during the week, which wasnt an option with the former commute. -
2/3 to Atlantic then the B/D to Rock Center. About 40 minutes door to door. I don't mind though. I get to read a bit or get my thoughts together on the way to work. Wish it was about half on the way home though!

I did one hour (by subway) when I lived in Astoria & worked in lower Manhattan. It was OK, although I think what made it bearable was being able to get a seat. An hour would be okay if you didn't need to drive. 1 hour driving a car seems like a waste of time to me.
My current commute to Bowling Green or Whitehall is usually around 20 to 25 minutes (2/3 to 4/5 OR B/Q to R/M), with minimal walking on either end. Love. It. -
My commute is the 2,3 to Penn. I work right above it, so I'm pretty spoiled. Hubby, however, has it much worse- drives from CH to S. Hackensack- the only way he can do it without killing himself is to leave the house at 7am and leaves the office at 4pm. That said, he hates it- we're moving.
Howdy, Stranger!
