  • I've tried this place several more times and it's been consistently good. I'm very glad that it's a part of the neighborhood.
  • yes, a snow day is perfect for delivery, but have a heart. i saw a delivery kid on a bike this afternoon having a helluva time just staying on his bike, much less moving forward. may i suggest that if you are ordering delivery, order from a place that delivers by car or foot. if you feel you must send a poor immigrant kid on a bike through the ice and snow for your dinner, please tip accordingly.
  • I went in last week and got nachos. They were supremely gross. Kind of scared to try anything else now. :(

Too many good reports from you all - just going to have to try a burrito instead.
  • I made my way through the snow today to get a takeout burrito for lunch - it was delish - fresh and good, with lots of salsa fresca heaped on. Really good, and the owner seemed very nice......
  • yo yo! How are those toppings? gotta check this joint out to taste what yo'all are rapping about. hmmmm...maybe tonight...waddaya know.
  • los muertos, or whatever, on washington is just as good as this place. it is also a lot more comfortable to sit down there.
  • I used to go to Muertos, but Maya is much closer to my home. As good as Muertos is, I prefer Maya, but you are correct that Muertos has much more seating.

jumping back to this post to just mention that you can get a chile relleno done right at chavella's, if by done right you mean authentic poblano style. you can smell them hand roasting the peppers as soon as your order goes into the kitchen.

this is not to knock those at maya's, which i haven't tried yet. just saying those at chavella's are the genuine article.

Yes, the chile relleno at Chavella's is delicious.

Damn skippy - they are great and it says a lot that a dish, that doesn't contain meat, has become one of my go-to orders.
  • Try the corn on the cob....its great! They have lemon and cheese and they are both really good! Also heard someone raving about the corn chowder but I haven't tried it yet. also, the roasted corn on a burrito is excellent. Guess I like corn!
  • Just had a Vegetarian Burrito with Spinach there. Not the best, but quite good, a few complaints though:

The hot-ingredient to cold-ingredient ratio was way off: It was around 85% cold ingredients with just a drop of rice and beans, which disappointed me.

It was mediu sized: not very big, and the guy who made mine was very, shall we say reserved, with the ingredients: he barely put anything in.

It was worth the 7 bucks, though. A nice place and good food.
  • just had a shredded beef one. better than i expected. the salty nachos/chips were pretty good, but seems unhealthy if you have too many.
  • why was that posted? they had 20 points and 14 is NYC average. Nothing freaked me out at all.
  • background I guess is someone started a Cheryl's thread which said DOH notice is in their window and that they appear to be closed for a bit.
so I went to DOH website to see why...
can't figure it out 'cause they were inspected less than a year ago..
so I figured why not sort violation by *violations* (rather than name) to see biggest offenders in our zip. Maya showed up with a recent review so I posted it.
  • We ate at Maya last weekend. Food was great & we'll definitely be back. Hubs and I were remarking that within a half-mile radius of Chez BKChickie we've got a lot of very good Mexican choices. La Taq, the Mexican on Franklin, and Chiles y Chocolates.
  • oh ok -- I thought you were posting something crazy shocking is all. Bummed about the Cheryl's thing.

    Don't forget Chavella's!

Chavella's--I did forgot the name. Isn't that the "Mexican on Franklin" I was referring to?
  • Chavella's is on Classon.
  • whynot_31 wrote: Chavella's is on Classon.
Thanks. Then I don't know about a Mexican on Franklin, just Chavella's on Classon. But, we're pretty spoiled for choice around here.

Do you think that Pequena's will ever resolve its issues with the space on Vanderbilt and open?

I have no further actual information.

...but if you want pure speculation:
    a. Yes, I think they have put enough $ into the place that they will stick it out and open eventually.

    b. Maya will have built such a following by then that they may be unable to compete in the massive size burrito market. They may have to become a restaurant that is mostly a bar. ...and there are lots of those on Vandy.

    c. Sucks to be Pequena.

The rumor is that Pequena's is supposed to open within the month. I don't think Maya being on the same block will be much of an issue for them. As long as they make better food (which from what I've seen from Maya so far is a definite possibility), they won't have difficulty winning people over. And there's always room for another bar. The more bars there are in the neighborhood, the better it is for all of them, because it makes the area more of a destination for night life.
  • I think if Pequena ever opens that it will do well. Maya is mainly for take-out, whereas Pequena will be mostly a sit-down place and (hopefully) a bar.
  • Just got around to trying this place today - I ordered delivery. It was pretty terrible. The taco could have been good (how do you f'up a bean taco?) except they wrapped it in aluminum foil and by the time it got to me the flour tortillas (?!) were mush. The burrito bowl had tons of liquid in it I had to pour out before I could eat it and the zucchini tasted like Chinese food. The worst though was a salad. It was a tofu salad...that I found two pieces of chicken in. As a vegan this was pretty disturbing. The 'dressing' tasted like processed cheese, yet there was no cheese listed as an ingredient. There was also supposed to be hot sauce in the dressing and if there was it was incredibly weak. All of the food was bland.

And yes, I called them, but the guy on the phone just kept repeating the same thing about sending the salad. I really had my hopes up for a taqueria and this isn't it.

  • I got chicken in my veggie burrito a few weeks back. Terrible.

True - but now Chavela's is on Franklin.

  • 8O Wow this has never happened to me (objectionable meat in my burrito). I am shocked and grateful too, since my gf and I order veggie burritos from here pretty frequently.

My enthusiasm for Maya Taqueria has been slightly tarnished.

  • Update Jan 2013:

Maya has applied for a beer and wine lic.
