Please help this kitty! E 16th St Ditmas Park
Hi neighbors-
For the past couple of weeks, we have heard one or two cats crying and screaming throughout the night, freezing and suffering. It is heartbreaking. We have taken in and adopted more than our share of kitties, and unfortunately for several reasons it is impossible for us to take in any more. We've seen two, late at night. They are usually located behind, and on the property of 386 East 16th Street in Ditmas Park. We are trying to make or purchase some sort of shelter, but of course getting them off the streets would be better. We do not live in that building, but we can get access to their property with a little notice. PLEASE HELP EITHER BY TAKING ONE INTO YOUR HOME, OR PASSING THIS INFO ALONG TO SOMEONE WHO MAY HELP!
Please PM for more info, or to arrange to help.

Don't forget to post this to craigslist and all the rescue agencies (a short list in the sticky post on this forum)

My heart breaks for the kitties! We too are "full up". What we have done to accommodate the kitties that we cannot take in (or won't come in) is built a shelter. They are warmer and cheaper than those that you would purchase.
Get a cardboard box, some of the cheap styrofoam "sheets" from Lowes or Home Depot, a box cutter, some plastic sheeting, Gorilla Glue and duct tape. Glue the styrofoam into the inside of the box. Set the box up so that it is sealed on all sides and cut a small "doorway" (small enough for a cat but not too big. Duct tape the doorway sides so the styrofoam does not come loose. Glue the styrofoam onto the outside of the box and seal the seams with duct tape. Put the plastic sheeting all around the box being careful to tape around the doorway. Fill the inside of the box with shredded paper or straw (do not use material since this does not dry if the kitties come in wet). -
Hey thanks neighbors! We've already done this, although fortunately (or possibly unfortunately) last night we heard and saw nothing. We'll check it out tonight, especially since we may get a little snow.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. -

That was a good idea with the box. You can also just buy an inexpensive tuppeware type container and cut a hole that only a cat can fit in a few inches above the ground. I've also put an escape hole on the other side in case they're being chased by something and put it next to a building for shelter. I duct a flap of some tarp type cloth over the doors to keep the weather out. The styrofoam is a great idea for insulation And Domino was totally correct to use straw or hay to bed the animals down. It's absolutely the best for warmth and to keep it drier inside.
It's really good of you to try to help this poor cats. -
Put the word out - and lighting some candles for protection for the kitties in this weather. Please keep us apprised!
